Madagascar

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Animation
Great animation from Dreamworks, marred by the fact it's a tad too short (75 mins maxs?) . All the charatcers are quirky. Loved the penguins ("Cute and cuddly, boyz; Cute and Cuddly!") and the lemurs ("I want to move it, move it!")

Sideways

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama
tour-de-force film, a must watch for wine lovers! talks about the exploits of 2 men going on a wine-tasting trip through the vineyards of sunny california. Miles is the maniacal depressed writer-to-be, going through the aftermaths of divorce. His friend, Jack, is a himbo-tic fallen-out-of-grace actor + nympomaniac who views all women as game for his Fabio-istique looks and casaonova mannerisms. History Maker by Delirious

History Maker

Is it true today that when people pray
Cloudless skies will break
Kings and queens will shake
Yes it's true and I believe it
I'm living for you

Is it true today that when people pray
We'll see dead men rise
And the blind set free
Yes it's true and I believe it
I'm living for you

I'm gonna be a history maker in this land
I'm gonna be a speaker of truth to all mankind
I'm gonna stand, I'm gonna run
Into your arms, into your arms again
Into your arms, into your arms again

Well it's true today that when people stand
With the fire of God, and the truth in hand
We'll see miracles, we'll see angels sing
We'll see broken hearts making history
Yes it's true and I believe it
We're living for you

on beauty, health and what really matters...

Just finished watching show with my mum. (nothing good on the free channels, but can't spare the extra cash for cable TV subscription). anyway, it's this show where men get their girlfriends to do make-over. No extreme make-over, as in "Nip/tuck" or "cut your cheek/break your bones to lengthen limb". Just some ways to make the women dress up differently from their routine get-out. interestingly, the men want their girlfriends not to go through it for vanity's sake, or for the mens' sake. Rather, they want their women (pardon the seemingly "crudity" of that expression) to have more self confidence in public.

It just went to reinforce a point brought up during lunch with my female colleagues. Some of them were commenting they need to invest in skin/facial/beauty care, to stay youthful, slim and basically look good. A thought just popped into my mind that man, it sure is tiring to be a woman. Not only do they have to be conscious of their safety when outdoors, they still have to consider how good they look. really, all these extra efforts to keep the men's attention. ah well, if it make them happy... :P

on a similar note, lunch topic got around to health. Some of my colleagues went for their annual medical checkup. after they got their results back, some of them had a rude shock because of the terrible results ala "post-mortem" reviews. I guess it's a rude wake-up call for myself to take care of myself too, even though I din go for one. Ny mum's had always been warning me to watch my diet, but me just turn a deaf ear. Lately has been feeling lethargic more and more easily. I think it's my lifestyle, no sunlight, trapped in cubicle for 1/2 of my my waking hours, no exercise, fat-soaked diet of fried, meaty stuff. All men die in the end. It's the suffering of failing health that all wish to avoid. ah, better dun NATO (No Action, Talk Only) again. Been postponing that jog far too long liao. better start running again, much as it irks me...

oh, i still haven't touch on what really matters, right? right. basically, beauty, health, riches and earthly stuff will fade away. Frankly, our confidence should not lie in these things of impermanence. Life is really like smoke, if you try to cling onto it with all your might. Ergo, isn't it time to look for Something more eternal? ;>

on rainy Sunday and Mickey Mouse...

man, rainy Sunday. it's been raining since morning. Have to wake up around 6.30am to close off the windows around the flat, so that rain wun splatter into the home. yeaps. it's that heavy, the rain. Still pouring when i left house this morning for church. Din feel like bringing an umbrella, so just put on my army jacket with my cap. been quite a while since i walked in the rain. brings back memories of playing in the rain when i was a kid. Fun way to travel, but sure cold when i was at church later. brrr....

interesting lunch later at Greenridge foodcourt. The people who just attended the IDMC (Intentional Disciple Making Conference) were sharing with us what did they learn in the seminar on postmodernity. basically, the first night was spent on definitions on the terms like "fidelism" and "hyper-reality". Then we went onto how the media portrays reality, and how it shapes our definition of reality. Somehow, the discussion got onto Troy and Mickey Mouse. (it's always weird how "serious" discussion always get warped in my cell group to some "discussion of the absurd". maybe influenced by postmodernins? :D but i shall not go there, it's a can of worms ...) Here are is an example of the conversation:

A: "Is Troy real?" (as in did it occured in history as a real event?)

B: "Eh, not really confirmed. But they did find some city ruins which supposedly are the remains of Troy..."

A: "I know, yea, I've been there and taken photographs. So it must be real! Right??"

B: "Yea, and I've been to Disneyland, and taken pictures with Mickey Mouse. So he's also real la..."

*silence ensues for 5 seconds, then laughter ensues*

Yea, we all speculated it was something in the food we ate, that gave us such "unusual" thoughts. But ultimately, what is real? Have we ever paused and taken stock how an oversized mouse can have a dog as a pet? Why does the duck wear no pants? how come Goofy and Pluto are both dogs, yet one speak and the other dun? :p fairytales all, and we accepted it wholesale as "truths". I guess man needs his flights of fantasy to take him away from the pains and sufferings of the world. I am an avid reader of fantasy, because it takes me away from the hurts and politics and evils of this earth. Yet ultimately, I cannot shun the fact amidst all the evil, there is still goodness to be found. Not by man's plan or design, but by a Power from on High.

ok, enough ramblings. Time to continue my pursuit of vicarious travelling by watching Japan Hour. till another time!

Kingdom of Heaven

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
woa, a good show from Ridley Scott (the guy who brought us "Gladiator"). Good cast, with Orlando Bloom (different from his "sissy" role in "Troy"), Liam Neeson ("wa si lim lao pei": "I am your father" in Hokkien), Jeremy Irons (looking evil with his scar),relatively new face Eva Greens (too much frekles?) and Ghassan Massoud (a convincing Saladdin). Based on the Crusades set in the 12th Century, it depicts a fair portrayal of heros and villians of both Christianity and Islam. Loved the dialogue, there are many good one-liners. A fairly long film (the singapore theatre version was about 2 hours and 15 minutes, minus away all the lovey-dovey steamy scenes). Highly recommended show. More than a guy war flick.
