Lunch Gathering at Fanny's (27 Sep '09)

Yesterday went for lunch at Fanny's place. Good gathering as a lot of us haven't caught up with one another since moving on to different stations in life. Great food and wonderful fellowship. It's amazing that after not being around each others for so long, We still much talk the same stuff (crap :p) and the bond is still pretty strong there.

Ooooo, and we tasted Theresa snow-skin durian mooncakes*. Ichiban! And Fanny brought out stuff bought from her recent Japan trip. Yesh, it's pigging out again! :D

*Made to almost legendary status^ by her colleagues' FB rave reviews... :D

^ but not legendary as Mrs Fung's durian cake...

Hike along new Diary farm trail (26 Sep 09)

Complete set! tadah!

Spend the sat morning exploring around the new Diary Farm trail. It's a pretty good trail to walk along, gentle slopes and all. After a while, decided to go off the beaten track and went "jalan jalan" along the mountain bike trail up towards the the Singapore Quarry. Got lost and had to make a few turn-backs, but when I finally found the place, its' a great view!

Met a lot of cyclists and photographers along the way. They are friendlier than your Summit path people, as in they would smile and greet you "Good morning". Somehow, that just makes the whole hike much brighter :P

My camera ran out of battery juice, so the last 5 pics were taken with my handphone. All in all, a good hike and work-out. May go back again and walk the other ways.

Soul Cravings Cafe

Rating:★★★
Category:Restaurants

Location:114 Neil Road Singapore 088852
Last night after my run, went to my friend's office in town to have dinner. Heard from another friend there's this nice restaurant called Soul Cravings Cafe. The online reviews of this place are pretty positive, so decided to check it out.

Me and my friend took the long/wrong way from his studio in Jiak Chuan; nonetheless, it was an interesting 15 minutes of exploration, as we discovered more happening places along Bukit Pasoh, Duxton, Craig & Neil Road. When we finally reached the palce, both of us thing the facepalm expression as we had both failed to take notice of it, even though we passed by it earlier.

The ambiance is pretty cozy and quiet. The waitress was prompt and helpful. The food was pretty yummy, tinged with that home-cooked goodness. It's not high end "atas" western cuisine. Still the food taste tres delicieux. Perhaps exercise and hunger makes the best sauce? :P

I ordered the lamb chops, while my friend had the grilled chicken. We are allowed a choice of 3 sides, so I chose garlic bread, coleslaw and garden greens. While the coleslaw was so-so only, the garlic bread and garden greens was fantastic! For an additional $4, you can add to your main course a choice of soup and dessert. I picked pumpkin soup and creme brule. Again, nothing fanciful, but it just gives you that warm glowy feel after you eaten it.

I also ordered 2 glasses of house pour, 1 red and 1 white wine. Preferred the red to the white, as it tasted better on the palate. For that satisfying meal, I spent only $25 nett. And all i can shay ish... huat ah~ :D

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”- Romans 15:7 Note the tense of the verbs used. Because He first acceptED us, so we can accept others with that one same acceptance from God. Not to just people in the church, but to all people. By doing so, you are praising your Heavenly Father.

Clair de Lune

Am smitten with this tune, since watching Tokyo Sonata. It captures a certain spirit, of wandering and searching and pining wistfulness...

Tōkyō sonata / トウキョウソナタ (2008)

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Foreign
Was a toss-up between this or the Korean show Thirst. In the end, chose this because the movie started earlier at the Cathay :p A good show, nonetheless. Great casting, as all the actors and actresses displayed solid emotions.

A typical Japanese family drama film, about dysfunctional relationships. A must watch for all fathers and father-to-be. Moral of the story: It all start from the head of the family! :p

Personally, the piano piece at the end alone is worth half a star.

Watched this VCD at a friend's place last night. Really educational film, about the mechanics of the underground heroin trade in Hong Kong. Heavily star-studded cast make the show even more compelling. The new word I learned for the night is "alkaloid" :p

Lunch at Mad Jack (19 Sep '09)

Went to lunch with some friends in town, despite the rain, it didn't dampen our spirits. :D Had a great time fellow-shipping over food and drinks. It's quite a nice quiet place if you go there just after noon. I'm guessing the rain kept most people sleeping at home, so that was why we had the whole place to ourselves for about the first 40 odd minutes. Oooo, must try the healthy fruit juices and nice desserts! very very da nice~

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Rating:★★★★

Another cult classic, that needs to be seen on the big theatre screen to be appreciated in all its magnificence. Being a Tarantino film, it has many of his signatures. And though it's set in the World War 2 era, it has the feel of a cowboy western movie. First time hearing Brad Pitt doing the hillybilly accent, it's a riot! XD

BKT and Tea night out (10 Sep '09)

Just realised I ahevn't uploaded these pictures from our Bak ku teh (肉骨茶) and tea night out on last Thursday. We took our Taiwanese ministry director to try BKT at Bugis, since he said he haven't had a chance to try that out. After that, we went to nearby tea-joint at Iluma to chill and relax. It was a good evening of eating and enjoying the presence of one another that night.

9 (2009)

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Animation
Dark yet humanistic in its telling, ala Tim Burton's style. I see it's mainly CGI, as compared with his previous stop-motion works. Actually, now that I read the wiki entry, Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (of Night Watch, Day Watch and Wanted fame) are the producers, while Shane Acker is the director.

The story is pretty gritty and grim, set in a post-apocalyptic world. The characters are pretty cutesy, reminds me of Little Big Planet (except they more humanoid in shape, as compared to LBP super-deformed ragdoll). The voice acting, cinematography and use of dark environments and haunting soundtrack contributes to a pretty good story. The pacing may be a tad slow for those who're expecting mega-explosions and fly-by-the-minute action.

I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Comedy
Wanted to catch 9, but the tickets were nearly all sold out at AMK Hub when I checked online. So decided to head over to Causeway point and watched this instead. I know, not much of a story, your straight-forward teenage bopper, coming of age film. Still it delivered its laughs. The lines are pretty okay - it seems they are lifted directly from the novel, so it might seem a bit flat on delivery. Still, dun go in expecting a masterpiece, and we have a winner! :D

A peaceful time with the dead (09 Sep '09)

Today is my spiritual day off. It's a day of rest that the office gives to us staff to go and spend time in solitude with the Lord. Since it's pretty dificult to find decent quiet space in Singapore, I decided to head out to Kranji War Memorial with my trusty pocket traveller NASB. Had a good time reading His word and enjoying the peace and quietness among the compatroits of our nation.

Calibrated my Polar-maru after a nice 2.4km run, had a relaxing swim, did housechores, checked my e-mail. Gonna head out to find some peace with God and the dead. Already huat! XD

on the sovereignty of God

Ever read a bible passage that jumps out of the pages of the Bible and speaks right into your heart? That's what happen to me this morning as I read the Bible before morning devotions this morning. Just randomly opened up the Bible and my eyes were captivated when I read the following scriptures:

Ezekiel 33

Ezekiel a Watchman
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man, speak to your countrymen and say to them: 'When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, 3 and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, 4 then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not take warning and the sword comes and takes his life, his blood will be on his own head. 5 Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had taken warning, he would have saved himself. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.'

7 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8 When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for [a] his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. 9 But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.

10 "Son of man, say to the house of Israel, 'This is what you are saying: "Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of them. How then can we live?" ' 11 Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?'

12 "Therefore, son of man, say to your countrymen, 'The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it. The righteous man, if he sins, will not be allowed to live because of his former righteousness.' 13 If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his righteousness and does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered; he will die for the evil he has done. 14 And if I say to the wicked man, 'You will surely die,' but he then turns away from his sin and does what is just and right- 15 if he gives back what he took in pledge for a loan, returns what he has stolen, follows the decrees that give life, and does no evil, he will surely live; he will not die. 16 None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live.

17 "Yet your countrymen say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is their way that is not just. 18 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, he will die for it. 19 And if a wicked man turns away from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he will live by doing so. 20 Yet, O house of Israel, you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But I will judge each of you according to his own ways."

The words that popped out to me were specifically

The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man,

6 ... if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.'

7 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman ... so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me

11 Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! ...

12 "... son of man, say, 'The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it.

20 ... I will judge each of you according to his own ways."

To me, the passage speaks to me both about God's wonderful grace and wrathful justice. Our Lord has given us the Great Commission, to go out and spread the good news. Not so as to increase the numbers in the church, for our God don't need numbers on His side to win, for He's already won the war. It's for the  benefit of the world who does not know God as Savior and Lord. It's a good reminder for moi, who's grown a bit indifferent towards evangelising to the lost.

I think the Lord is afraid that I didn't get the message the first time round. He followed up with a second passage. He used the speaker this morning to share from Matthew 16:13-19. OK God, you win. I get it :P

After-walk dinner (06 Sep '09)

After the walk, a few of us decided to go for dinner nearby City Hall area. Initially we wanna go to Yet con, but it was full-house. So we went across the street to Chin chin and had our fill of chicken rice & hainanese pork chop. Pig out!

at the Singapore Run 2009 (06 Sep '09)

Yesterday a few of us went down to support the fund-raising event for the President's Challenge. It was a great walk. Other who were more enthusiastic and "on" than us ran ahead, while the few of us just strolled in a relaxed manner just in front of the safety vehicles. :p Had fun carrying and walking along with the children of my friend. And the weather was just absolutely fantastic! No sun, super cool, breezy~

Blossom's Birthday Lunch (04 Sep '09)

Last Friday we decided to throw an early celebration for Blossom's birthday, as she'll be traveling to the United States for a a month. For some inexplicable reasons, I was the only guy there. Thus I designate myself as the unofficial photographer so as to justify my presence at a sisters' party. :D The food was good, and the stories and fellowship were great! Blessed birthday, Blossoms!

Went there for dinner yesterday with my brother. I ordered the cheese-filled tonkatsu set, while my brother ordered the donburi set. The tonkatsu are absolutely fantastic! The succulence of the thick yet bite-sized pork that just crackles with the "kuri kuri" sounds... Coupled with the yellow wasabi with the BBQ sauce... I tell you, this shop really know how to make a good katsu!

Unfortunately, the rest of the meal fell below expectation. The soup wasn't the standard miso with seaweed soup; instead it was pork broth with think pork strips. Also, I suspect the japanese rice they used is a tad lower grade than those found on the market. The pickles the give is also not the usual yellow or pink ginger slices; rather it tastes like cabbage pickles. If you ask me to grade on the pork alone, I will give it at least 4 stars. However, with the rest of the elements thrown in, I'm forced to give it 2.5 stars out of 5.
