Lunch at Xin Wang (31 Aug '10)
Went with a few colleagues to Xin Wang cafe at Siglap just now. They had some new stuff since we last been there a couple of months back, like bamboo container rice (竹筒饭) and udon noodles. It was kinda quiet , as we managed to go before the lunch crowd. Had a nice quiet lunch fellowshipping (and fei-lou-shipping) with my team-mates.

Free concert at Botanical Gardens (28 Aug '10)
After a nice late lunch at Plaza Sing, decided to head over to Botanical Gardens for a stroll. It was hot, sunny, humid but breezy. :p As i neared the Shaw Foundation Symphony area, my ears caught the whiffs of a band going through rehearsal.
My interest piqued, I went over to 'kay poh kay poh' (家婆家婆). It turns out Crescent Girl's School was giving a public performance. I sat there for 1 hours plus listening to their whole repertoire.
They were okay in their playing, given the weather conditions. Plus there was some problems with the audio mike equipment. The female conductor of the band was pretty 'wooden' in her conducting; the male conductor put a little bit more flair and energy. The final piece on Wondergirls "Nobody"was a bit weird though. Too bad my camera battery life ran out, if not could have captured a video on that piece :p~

1st taste of port (26 Aug '10)
Last night decided to open up the bottle port my friend got for me from DFS. First time I'm drinking tawny port. the taste is very different from normal red wine - akin to whiskey, without the string after-burn. Smells very sugary, yet it doesn't taste cloyingly sweet. In fact, it's kinda spicy. Had a tipple with my bro, and both of us enjoyed it. Cheerios!~

MC Hammer - Pray
Lets kick it old skool
--------------------------------------
MC Hammer - Pray
That's word,we pray(pray,pray)
We got to pray
Just to make it today
I said we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray(pray)
We got to pray
Just to make it to pray
That's word,we pray
All my life I wanted to make it to the top
(That's word,we pray)
Some said I wouldn't
They told me no,but I didn't stop
(That's word,we pray)
Working hard,making those movies everyday
(That's word,we pray)
And on my knees every night, you know I pray
That's word,we pray(pray)
Ah,yeah,pray(pray) we got to pray
Just to make it today
I said we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray(pray)
We got to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
Now I just think that you
Can do what ever you want
(That's word,we pray)
I'm bustin' these rhymes
Making this money and I won't
(That's word,we pray)
Forget my people or may town or my ways
(That's word,we pray)
And on my knees.every night I'm still gonna pray
That's word,we pray(pray)
Ah,yeah,pray(pray) we got to pray
Just to make it today
I said we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray(pray)
We got to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
Time and time and time and time again
(That's word,we pray)
I kept on knocking,but
These people wouldn't let me in
(That's word,we pray)
I tried and tried and tried and tried to make a way
(That's word,we pray)
But nothing happened till that day I prayed
That's word,we pray(pray)
Ah,yeah,pray(pray) we got to pray
Just to make it today
I said we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray(pray)
We got to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
Childrem dying,oh,so fast from this or that
(That's word,we pray)
Needing that money
Smoking that dope and doing that crack
(That's word,we pray)
Ten years old stand outside
Better look out
(That's word ,we pray)
Dead and gone, necer had a chance
What's it all about?
That's word,we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
I need to pray(pray),ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
That's word,we pray( x3)
That's word,we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
I need to pray(pray),ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
On a mission start to doubt.here we go
(That's word,we pray)
Kicking back, read these words we need to know
(That's word,we pray)
Living high,living good,living long
(That's word,we pray)
Take a minute,bust a prayer
And you're good to go
That's word,we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
I need to pray(pray),ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray
We're sending this one out to the Lord
(That's word,we pray)
And we thank you and we know we need to pray
(That's word,we pray)
Cause all the blessings that are good they come from above
(That's word,we pray)
And once again we want
To say "thank you" to the Lord with all our love
That's word,we pray(pray) ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
I need to pray(pray),ah,yeah,pray
We need to pray
Just to make it today
That's word,we pray

Steamboat dinner at Fat Fish (20 Aug '10)
Last Friday went out for dinner at Admiralty club. Always zoomed past the place when taking MRT; this is actually first time I've been there for a meal. Very nice quiet place, and it's ala carte buffet! No rice for me that night, just kept whacking the meat and the soup. The best part was each time drink the soup got different taste one, cos of different ingredients thrown in. MMMmmmmm, wanna go there again!

Present from DFS! (18 Aug '10)
Came into office to a pleasant surprise! Before my friend went overseas, asked him to buy a bottle of port on his way back past DFS (Duty Free Shop) during immigration check-in. Clean-forgotten all about it till he passed me the bottle (Thanks a bunch, Jon! :D) Didn't look at it till just now. It has a very "unique" name, to say the least... :p

on spiritual lessons learnt on my day off
I cleaned up my room.
Now before you cast your stones at me and cry "Blasphemy!"^, let me explain. The act of cleansing is an act of purification. Despite the tediousness and physicality of the activity, cleaning my room actually brought a few spiritual lessons to mind:
1) The room was not dirty before/ the soul is not dirty before; but due to dust/sin, it is dirty.
2) it takes effort to stay clean. The room cannot just stay clean by itself, it needs someone to clean it (a duh)... Likewise, the soul is stained by original sin. No matter how hard one works at being sinless, the stain will always be there. Unless you got an Ultimate Cleaner~
3) I found a couple of lost treasures buried beneath the heaps of dust bunnies and papers (i.e. bills, flyers, church pamphlets, whoops! :p) Similarly, beneath our sinful selves, are qualities that are precious and dear to God. Yeaps, they're there, you just have to look harder to find them...
All in all, yesterday's experience was similar to the toilet-cleaning experience I had a couple of years back.* I'm glad that God brought me back to a long forgotten lesson. Oh, and my room's only two-thirds cleaned. Looking forward to the next cleaning experience :P

Isaiah 55
Invitation to the Thirsty
1 "Come, all you who are thirsty,come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
3 Give ear and come to me;
hear me, that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.
4 See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander of the peoples.
5 Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations that do not know you will hasten to you,
because of the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor."
6 Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree,
and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the LORD's renown,
for an everlasting sign,
which will not be destroyed."

SSO at the Park (15 Aug '10)
Went down with some friends to Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) performance at the Park. Was late, cos too cheapo to take a cab down, and forgotten how long it takes to walk from the MRT down through the Botanical Gardens to reach the place. And I've forgotten how crowded it can get at such events. The conductor was great and the violin soloist is fantastic. Truly an enjoyable evening at the park~

In the Presence
May this help you to go into the presence of God, shalom!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In The Presence
Unknown
G C
In the presence of a holy God
G C
I bow down and I a-dore
G C
You re-veal the secrets of my heart
Em Am D
And I'm shaken to the core
Chorus:
G C G C
Holy, holy, holy God — How awesome is your name
G C Em Am D
Holy, holy, holy God — How majestic is your reign
C Am D G
And I am changed in the presence of a holy God.
In the presence of a holy God
There's new meaning now to grace
You took all my sins upon yourself
And I can only stand amazed, and I cry
(Chorus)
In the presence of your infinite might
I'm so small and frail and weak
When I glimpse your power and wisdom, Lord
I have no words left to speak, but I cry
(Chorus)
In the presence of your glory
All my crowns lie in the dust
You are righteous in your judgements, Lord
You are faithful, true, and just, and I cry
(Chorus)

on good figs and bad figs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeremiah 24 (New International Version)
Two Baskets of Figs
1 After Jehoiachin [a] son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the craftsmen and the artisans of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the LORD showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the LORD. 2 One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten. 3 Then the LORD asked me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?"
"Figs," I answered. "The good ones are very good, but the poor ones are so bad they cannot be eaten."
4 Then the word of the LORD came to me: 5 "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians. [b] 6 My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. 7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
8 " 'But like the poor figs, which are so bad they cannot be eaten,' says the LORD, 'so will I deal with Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and the survivors from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt. 9 I will make them abhorrent and an offense to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword, an object of ridicule and cursing, wherever I banish them. 10 I will send the sword, famine and plague against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their fathers.' "
(Taken from http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah+24&version=NIV)
I came across it twice in the span of a few days during the deadman's watch. Was still keeping it within my heart, due to the enormity of the message. At the invitation of one of the facilitators, I shared this with one of the morning groups. To me, this is a call to repentance.
Interestingly, the facilitator went on to further clarify that things are not always as it seems. From the above passage, to the world it would have seemed the exiles are being punished for their sins, and the remnant in Jerusalem is being "saved". Not so in God's scheme, for He promised to be the deliverer of the exiles, and destroy the remnant at Jerusalem.

on takeaways from today's prayer meeting
today could only stay for the 1st hour of the prayer meeting in church. Pastor Kai used below passage to anchor our thoughts for the prayer session
------------------------------------------
Acts 3 (New American Standard Bible)
Healing the Lame Beggar
1Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer.2And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple.
3When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms.
4But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, "Look at us!"
5And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.
6But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene--walk!"
7And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened.
8With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
9And all the people saw him walking and praising God;
10and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
(from http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=acts%203&version=NASB)
------------------------------------------
He asked us to share among ourselves what did the above passage impress upon us. The couple next to me shared that they were awed again that God made ordinary men such as Peter and John to perform the miracles to glorify God's name. I was struck by the fact that when the beggar was healed, he was not only healed to the point of mere walking; he was able to leap and bounce (verse 8b) everywhere like a Gummi bear :p). And out of that overflow came great joy and spiritual worship (verse 8b). At least this beggar's response is different from the ex-leper in Life of Brian.
P.S. And just before I left, I was struck by the fact the lame guy was sitting in front of the temple, and not in it. I was searching my mind through the laws which God gave Moses, David and Solomon on whether God disallows disabled people into His sanctuary. And I can't think of any. So i deduce that it is men who set up rules that do not allow the under-privileged into the temple. Saddens my heart just to think about this... :(
