on the kiasu student syndrome...

went to the library just now. wanted to use the 2nd level reference section to finish reading my book as well as use my laptop at the same time. Had a premonition that the library will be crowded with people today, as it's the 1 week school break for Singaporean secondary schools and junior colleges. Imagine my horror of horrors when I stepped into the library just before the opening hours at 9.50am.

I saw of sea of students waiting in front of the library entrance, all rushing to go into the library! This is MADNESS! It's the 1st Monday of the school holidays*, and kids are just waiting and wanting to study. With a resigned sigh, I just graciously decided not to fight to the front of the entrance, as many of the other students are doing... :D I spotted a few adults who also moved to the back of the crowd.

When the metallic shutter-gate started going up, i saw the crowd moved forward to the gates. When the gates were just high enough, some of the people bent themselves a little lower so that they can start going into the library just a bit faster than the rest. I just rolled my eyes when they did that.

Well, thank God I still managed to find a place at the 2nd level. After I set up the laptop, went off to grab a couple of books and came back to read and use my laptop. As I came back, I saw quite a couple of seats that had people's belongings strewed al over, but no people at the table. Later, as I went to answer nature's call about 45 minutes later, the seats that were taken still did not have any people studying there.

Am kinda pissed off by that. If you want to go to the library to study, then do so! Do not just go to the library and take up the much needed space by leaving all your notes, books and bags all over the table and then leave elsewhere.

I also scanned the the studying areas, and found that a few students actually just take up more than 1 person's space. They put their belongings on another place just next to them so that they have additional space. So much for graciousness and considerations for others' needs...

Well, should stop the bitching for now..

  2. What's tougher than a diamond point, stronger than a crazy kiasu crowd, calmer than a frozen clam drizzled with lemon juice?

A smiley no, sorry, please-leave-your-notes-in-the-locker librarian.

  4. yeaps, i kenah that yesterday. Left my stuff for a while to go aswer nature's call. came back and found the librarian waiting over my stuff. Told me sternly not to leave my stuff unattended.

After she left, realised she left a piece if orange orange paper. It's sort of a ticket, with time written when she was there. Weirds la. Guess she got a job to do.
