Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore

My friend was sick during the Oktoberfest earlier on last month, so we didn't get a chance to partake in the festivities. Decided to have a get-together last Saturday at Paulaner for some beer and food.

My first time at Paulaner, it was not bad. But guess I expected more, since I heard so much good reviews about. It was alright, but not as great as I had expected. The beer is smooth though. I ordered the 0.5 litre Munich dark lager, to go with my beef tenderloin. Absolutelment parfait! :D Maybe next time I'll try with the more traditional pork knuckles and bratwurst~

Went there last friday night for a soiree organised by my friends. First time there, it's a great place to chill out, and the wines are fantastic! I think we had 2 bottles of the South African Buitenverwachting - Buiten Blanc 2007. Very sweet and smooth~ and a bottle of red, but didn't know from where and when.

We sat inside the cool air-conditioning. A pity it was kinda crowded, which made it difficult to talk, as we were seated at a long table for 12. It would have been better for talking if we had shifted outside to the al fresco, but they couldn't arrange it.

haha, maybe go there by myself on a weekday in the afternoon and have a quiet drink with a friend or two on my leave days~

wanted to send this out via sms to my usual kakis, but my mobile refuse to cooperate in the morning. something to mull on for the next few days...
-----------------------------------------------------

God, at his deepest level, is a lover (1 John 4:8). he is relationally oriented, and relationally driven. He desires connection with us from womb to tomb: "I have loved you with an everlasting love" (Jer. 31.3). God's loving nature isn't passive. It's active. Love multiplies itself. God the relational Lover is also God the aggressive Creator. He wants to fill up his universe with beings who care for him - and for each other.

My Heart is Filled

Sang this song for morning devotions. Great song to start the day~
-----------------------------------------------------
My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who bore my pain;
Who plumbed the depths of my disgrace
And gave me life again;
Who crushed my curse of sinfulness
And clothed me in His light
And wrote His law of righteousness
With pow'r upon my heart.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who walks beside;
Who floods my weaknesses with strengths
And causes fear to fly;
Whose ev'ry promise is enough
For ev'ry step I take,
Sustaining me with arms of love
And crowning me with grace.

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To him who reigns above,
Whose wisdom is my perfect peace,
Whose ev'ry thought is love.
For ev'ry day I have on earth
Is given by the King;
So I will give my life, my all,
To love and follow him.

on faithfulness over fruitfulness...

Today had an enjoyable time at the morning staff devotions. My friend read Chapter 15 from John Piper's Life as a Vapor. It's entitled "The Path of Wisdom may Not Be the Most Fruitful path for God's Glory". Just by the title itself,  you can tell it's a deep chapter. I think different ones took away different lessons from the reading.

For me, I took away the lesson that we sometimes measure our success too much in world terms. How many souls are we saving per day in such and such areas - it becomes very task-oriented and performance-driven. Yet I am reminded of stories told by my church missions focus-groups, of how some missionaries were never given to see the fruits of their labors.

There's this story of how this missionary had to plough for 30 to 40 years in a extreme remote part of the world, without having seeing a single person coming to receive the Lord Jesus as their personal savior. It is only after his death that the harvest was reaped in; whole villages came to salvation because this one man had done the work of the preaching of the Gospel.

I wonder what would I have done, had I been in this missionary's shoes? Would I have persevered on in the face of adversity, or just thrown in the towel? And what would I do if I've know this missionary as a friend. Would I have encouraged him to stay on? Or would I have have given him advice to be "wise" and evaluate his works, and return from the fields?

Others shared other thoughts. Another friends shared sometimes it's not so much of the results, but the knowledge that we are walking right with God. Are we in His will when we choose a certain path over another? Another person shared it blesses her heart  when she and her husband  read about the  life of Micah - on how no one really listened to his words (not even the kings) till about a hundred years down the road, where another prophet, Jeremiah's life was spared on account of Micah's words.

So in the end, my friend who was facilitating, shared a catchphrase that he learnt while attending a church back home in the States. It was "faithfulness over fruitfulness". Something to chew upon over the weekend for me, I guess...

on carrying one another's burdens...

Went up to BibleGateway.com to look up for today's verse to mass-sms to my regular groups.
The verse for today is

“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”- Galatians 6:2

eh, as still got space for my message, I added "What can i pray for you, dear friend?"

Actually, no need to add it one, but thought of just practically working out the scripture verse. There may not be physical or spiritual things I can provide to my friends' needs, but still can keep them in prayer, right?

Here are some of the replies I got back, in essence, not verbatim:
-----------------------------------------------

"World peace"

ok, this is one of the earliest replies I had, coming from an old friend. So I just sms back "Will do so, mr congeniality". For those who don't get it, go watch "Miss Congeniality", starring Sandra Bullock.

-----------------------------------------------

"U can pray that i love ppl more, and also get back on track for my QT."

Ah, this is another dear friend. Funny he has to ask for more love for people, cos' to me, his heart is very the "big, big" ah. Also blessed him back with a reply.

-----------------------------------------------

"my job..my baluku..my walk wif god.."

From my own flesh and blood (my sister). She knocked her head twice in a day, nearly at the same spot. I saw the "baluku" when I helped to apply the medicated oil-rub on it. Replied back that God will provide, God will heal and God will take care.

-----------------------------------------------

"Pray that i'll get over my friend's death as he just passed away."

From a friend who's much younger than me. Dunno on his personal views and thoughts about
death and life, but assured him that God's love and peace is with him and his friend's family.

-----------------------------------------------

My friend has a thanksgiving item. She's been struggling for 1 year at her workplace, for lack of a good "boss"*. But she's been praying for God to work His will in bringing someone whom she will find favor with. And God did!  So I told her I'll be giving thanks with her and thanks be to Jesus for her answered prayers.

-----------------------------------------------

so, why am I sharing all these? Is it to glorify myself?
Nay, my dear reader, it's to affirm the words of the Scriptures, that Jesus had, does and will answer prayers offered to Him. It's also for all believing friends to pray alongside with me for all these requests. So get down on your knees, brother and sister, and PRAY!

* In her own words "1 yer of being tekan upside down".

On Daddy dates...

Just read this off the website. For all the busy parents of our times~ Forward it to you busy friends!

Daddy Dates

October 17, 2007

Posted by Pastor James Dahlman

For a while now I’ve been doing Daddy Dates. The way it works is that each week I take one of my kids out. I have 4 kids so that pretty much means each of them get to go out with me once a month. I don’t really have an agenda. It is my opinion that there is an incredible deception in our culture one that devastates families. It is the concept of “quality time”. People use this concept all the time to limit the time they spend with people, specifically their own children. The idea is that I can, because I’m so busy, plan a short amount of time with

someone that is above and beyond any other time spent with that person, which is why we call it “quality”.

I actually have another word for it, but I’ll refrain. Most of the time the best moments aren’t planned, they just happen. How can I make sure that I am there for those things? If I increase the time that I spend with someone the odds that a “quality” event happens increase. The key here isn’t quality, it is quantity. The more time I spend with my kids the more I will experience them. I will be there when they have a question, fall, score a goal, draw a great picture, learn

Spanish, make a silly face, burp the alphabet, whatever it is.

So back to my Daddy Dates… Which I really need a better name for when I take the boys out. There is no agenda except to increase the time that I spend with them. They have determined that it is the perfect time for us to go to Dairy Queen, and I am diligently working my way through all the Blizzard flavors. Nothing earth shattering yet, just lots of fun (and ice cream). Below is a photo I took with my phone of my daughter Anna the last time we went out.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (1985)

Rating:★★★★
Category:Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Patrick Süskind
Translated from the German by John E. Woods

Ahh, the story upon which the film is based upon. A definitely enjoyable read. The descriptions of the scents, the aromas, the smells - wonderful! Feed us with more background from which Jean-Baptiste Grenouille and the rest of the characters in the novel. Finished it in a sitting of 3-4 days. Definitely different from the film adaptation - one sees Grenouille as more of a monster in the novel, rather than a misunderstood human in the film.

on God's ways of restoring the lands...

The Fall of Jerusalem

The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them through its messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at the prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians, who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and spared neither young man nor young woman, old man or aged. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. He carried o Babylon all the articles from the temple of God, both large and small, and the treasures of the LORD's temple and the treasures of the king and his officials. They set fire to God's temple and broke down the wall of Jerusalem; they burned down all the palaces and destroyed everything of value there.

He carried into exile to Babylon the remnant, who escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power. The land enjoyed its sabbath rests; all the time of its desolation it rested, until the seventy years were completed in fulfilment of the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah.

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and put it in writing:

"This is what Cyrus king of Persia says:

" ' The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Anyone of his people among you - may the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.' "

- 2 Chronicles 36:15-23 (NIV)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Emphasis in italics my own)

Personal reflections:

1) Our pastors always encourages us to look for the connectors in the passages we're reading; though they may not be big words i.e. "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", they do tell important things. In this case, the "again and again ... until..." really emphasizes how big the grace of God is towards His people; yet there is still a limit for a given time.

2) Amazing on how God takes care of his creation! Even when the Israelites never took good care of their inheritance, God took care of the lands for them~

on the death of a godly king...

The Death of Josiah

After all this, when Josiah had set the temple in order, Neco king of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah marched out to meet him in battle. But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, "What quarrel is there between you and me, O king of Judah? It is not you I am attacking at this time, but the house with which I am at war. God has told me to hurry; so stop opposing God, who is with me, or he will destroy you."

Josiah, however, would not turn away from him, but disguised himself to engage him in battle. He would not listen to what Neco had said at God's command but went to fight him on the plain of Megiddo.

Archers shot King Josiah, and he told his officers, "Take me away; I am badly wounded." So they took him out of his chariot, put him in the other chariot he had and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. He was buried in the tombs of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for him.

Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah, and to this day all the men and women singers commemorate Josiah in the laments. These became a tradition in Israel and are written in the Laments.

The other events of Josiah's reign and his acts of devotion, according to what is written in the Law of the Lord - all the events, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.

- 2 Chronicles 35:20 - 36:1 (NIV).
(Emphasis in italics my own)

--------------------------------------------------------------
Notes from the application Bible:
35:21-24 Josiah ignored Neco's message because of who Neco was - king of a pagan nation. The mistaken assumption that Neco could not be part of God's larger plan cost Josiah his life. While not everyone who claims to have a message from God really does, God's message s may come in unexpected ways. God has spoken to pagan kings in the past (Genesis 12:17-20, 20:3-7; see also Daniel 4:1-3) Don't let prejudice or false assumption blind you to God's message.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Personal reflection
Sometimes those of us who had received the Gospel tend to think too highly of ourselves, and may have the  thinking that God will only speak to us within the church. Yet Scriptures also reveal that this is not always the case. In having the thinking that God would only reveal His messages only through us, to to put Him in a box and presume too much upon our own logic. Who says Godly wisdom cannot come through pre-believers? Another reminder to myself to be humble when I talk to my non-Christian friends.

on time-wasting fixations...

yeaps, as you can see, the blog counts on my site has dropped significantly these past 2 weeks. That's because I've been hooked on the Super Poke! application on Facebook.

This application offers me absolutely nothing, save the possibilities of doing more "virtual" actions to my jim-gang of buddies.

Well, enough is enough, there's only so much energies in my life I can spend; and frittering them away on Super Poke! is definitely not a good testimony~ Onward, Christian soldier! :D

on an old song that stirs the heartstrings...

ah, there's gonna be a 新谣 concert at my church at the end of the month. Was "advertising" in my high school Google group. Thought of the only song I can rememebr from those times* and put down the first liner.

-------------------------------------------------

Pan Liang's and Serene's Wedding

This was the church wedding ceremony. Thanks, Eddie, for the pictures!

on a gracious God...

They slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priest and the Levites were ashamed and consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the temple of the LORD. Then they took up their regular positions as prescribed in the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests sprinkled the blood handed to them by the Levites. Since many in the crowd had not consecrated themselves, the Levites had to kill the Passover lambs for all those who were not ceremonially clean and could not consecrate their lambs to the LORD. Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed fro them saying, saying, "May the LORD, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God - the LORD, the God of his fathers - even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary." And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people.

on a stoned and happy Children's day...

well, the above title would definitely get the authorities hot on my heels. Just to clarify, was feeling stoned not because I inhaled any hallucinogenic mushrooms or weed or whatsoever. Rather, it was from the late night revelry the previous night, while celebrating my colleague's joyous wedding. (Congrats, Pan Liang and Serene! and thanks to Eddie for providing this photo^~)

Had great fun laughing and joking with all my friends. My first company wedding function*. We didn't get to "sabo" the groom much, because we decided to be "gracious". ;D The only nasty thing we did was to ask the groom to drink a wineglass with red wine with raw egg white and yolk in it. According to the married man, this is for " 早生贵子". Not sure how Biblical is that, but I'm sure the couple got our warm wishes behind that gesture... :P

And the second part, it's Children's Day! Decided to buy Hello Panda for everyone's that in office, to cheer them up.

Everybody seems genuinely amused to receive these from me. They were like "Erm, aren't we like too old to celebrate Children's Day?" Well, I just reminded them nicely, "No what? You still child of God, right?"

^ Yeaps, we took a couple of shots, but apparently they managed to get a picture of me without my trademark funny face :p

* the "ang mor" a bit the "sala" liao, but you all get the drift... i hope.
