on thoughts about my Hong Kong trip

1) Am definitely impressed by the frequency of the MTR system in HK. The trains comes every 1-2 min!* Then again, they have more carriages (i.e. longer train) and more entrances per carriage, so that does help to facilitate boarding and disembarking.

2) Second thing, still on the public transport, the MTR trains are always air-conditioned! Even when it's crowded, you can feel the air-con! The SMRT have to learn on this one, that hot passengers makes angry passengers.... :P

3) Thirdly, STILL on the public transport, they have flat-rate fares on the main MTR lines and public buses. Good if you;re travelling long distances, not so good if you;'re travelling short distances...

4) HK people walk long distances. Just a way of life, if you dun like walking, don't go HK. Or be prepared to spend money on cab fares...

5) Hot, HOt, HOT in HK! Almost no clouds during the time we were there, so have the fiery sun beating down on us...

6) Beer is cheaper than water (as in most places except Singapore...)

7) You need to understand, if not speak Canto to get a good bargain while shopping.

8) I LLUUURRRVVVEEE 臭豆腐!!

*depending on which line. Those closer to HK Island and Kowloon have a shorter frequency. Those going to outlying areas comes slower at every 3-5 minutes.

  3. What I like about the MTR system is that though the number of people may be as crowded as Singapore, it is not as frustrating. People going into trains don't block the doors, making it difficult for peeps in the train to get out, you don't get *ahem* BIG people who for some reason or other like standing near the doors obstructing people going out; people talking in trains don't make excessively loud noise and give you enough room without sticking their elbows / hands in your face; they don't suddenly stop at the top and bottom of escalators blocking your paths or at gantries rummaging for their passes...

Oops... :P My public transport pet peeves...

  4. Sir, you have to understand that they have a population twice the size of Singapore. If they have the same no. of carriages, the trains would be superbly packed. Also, if they don't come that often, it might end up being packed too!

Hot? Then hide out in the hotel and malls! Kekeke... plus good reasons to pop by cafes for more drinks! =)

Drink beer in HK? Gosh... people go there drink ice milk teas and yuan yangs, plus not to mentioned Hui Lao San mango stuff, and you? Drink beer? Hahahaha....

  5. it's ok, i think ranting about the public transport system is becoming a national past-time here :D then again, it'salso reflective of our "com-prain" culture :p I'm guilty of that sometimes. Well, compare to my friends who have to walk over 2 hours to their destinations in other countries, I am better off. So let's drop it off at there ;)

  6. yeaps, the original 许流山 taste better in HK, and cheaper too. the milk teas and yuan yangs not really my cuppa, cos they use carnation milk instead of condensed milk. Tastes "siap siap" to me, if you get wat i mean? still, an interesting variation.

Anyway, i love the taste of HK milk tea, but a guy i met in London told me that its actually quite fattening... Ba... =P
