An Ode to the Ramli Burger

wanted to compose a poem for this favourite Malaysian burger of mine, but realise i) I've lost much of my "england" prowess over the years* - can hardly distinguish between a metaphor and a simile nowadays... ii) I have the inspiration but not the words to describe the heavenly burger, in all its majestic galore of margarine, onions, egg, cabbage, mayonnaise and Worcestershire sauce. Much to add to the mystical glamor is the "mysterious meat" portion**, which normally tastes like chicken or beef to us commoners.

Got my first taste of it 2 years back, on the road-side stalls in K.L. Have never found the equivalent of it elsewhere, not even in Singapore. That's why I braved the temptations and dangers of Jalan Alor last week during the church-camp extension, at 2.30am in the morning, just for that heavenly taste again. Ah.... the wonderful memories of sinking my teeth into that Daging Special... sigh

*maybe I should go look for my old JC Eng. Lit. teacher for tuition lessons, he's a NATIVE speaker :p

** a plausible reason on why the Singapore government banned this meat product.

  2. Yes!! i was wright about the ELit.

But i see multiple sightings of them at the recent pasar malams you know... temptation is not easy to flee from, huh.

i am also disappointed with your misleading title, ahem. What's so great about de royal Ram? No enticement, no description, not a whiff of perspiration, NO ODE, HELLO!!??!!

  10. Wah, sounds like quite a spread. Lemme know, whenever the aroma escapes, when it's golden-brown or it passes the satay stick test and you're all ready to spill de beans...me here with my napkin neatly tucked in my collar and me fork n spoon / knife, whatever.

  11. Well, so far, I haven't tasted a Ramly in Singapore that comes close to the ones I've tasted in K.L. So there must be some serect sauce or receipe.

    Good luck on the experimentation!

  12. Sure it does. And dun get me wrong, I do love the K.L. Ramly burger, how else would I account going out of my hotel room at 2.30am just to satisfy my Ramly craving? :p

Just that sometimes love cannot be adequately expressed by words... How do you describe the sensation of melted cheese, meshed with crunchy lettuce and cabbage, together with the crisp but tender beer condimented with the worchestershire sauce going down the palate? "Wa bway hiao leh"...

  13. Maybe it's the Singapore censorship of ingredients. Or the close scrutiny of the Min of ENV. Maybe dat's y K.L. got more juicy stuff... you never know what goes into the Ramli!

  14. Ah, now i can begin to compare your enthusiasm with mine. Think i relish watching the encik (spelling?) prepare it, scrape his pan, press the patty, flip the egg, etc. more than the actual munching. Watching skilful performances are mesmerising, like listening to Rev Price at camp.

  15. Goso: i just found out, i know you lah.. we've met before at cg. :) If i ever succeed in experiments, be sure, I'll call you.

  16. Ha ha. Now you HAVE to call me. And experiment or no, i'm trying out the very next thing that comes out from your beautifully busy kitchen!
