hahah, one of my organisation's interns "fun" experience in Albania~
on my takes about biblical meditation
OK, here are some thoughts and takes that my friends and I came up in response to the questions I posted in my earlier entry:
What's the difference between other forms of meditation and Christian meditation?
My friend pointed out that in other forms of meditation, people are always focused on searching for something, be it God, Truth, Inner peace or something else.
In Christian meditation, we start by focusing upon God , someone who is already there.
What's the difference between thinking and meditation on God?
Meditating is focused thinking. Involves prolonged length of time.
Is worship and prayer integral to meditation? What is/are the difference(s) between worship, prayer and meditation? What is/are the commonalities?
Yes, worship and prayers, to me, are integral to meditation.
The difference for me is that worship is an attitude; prayers is a form of communications; and meditation is an act.
The common things these all three things share is that they point us to God. In worship, you are worshipping God, with whom you have a relationship with; in prayers, you are praying to God, with whom you are communicating with; in meditation, you are thinking about God, to know more about Himself.
Is there a difference between Biblical meditation and Christian meditation?
Tricky one - Biblical meditation means thinking upon God's words from the Bible. Christian meditation means thinking about God from the whole of His creation.
Is positive thinking the same as Biblical meditation?
Nope, they are not the same as they share different sources. In positive thinking (and other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT), the source is human wisdom and science. In Biblical meditation, God is the source.
What is the purpose of Biblical meditation?
For me, it's to know Him more, and to keep reminding ourselves who God is in our live.
Did Jesus meditate?
Honestly, it didn't say in the Scriptures that Jesus meditate. It is written however, that our Lord takes extended time away from public ministry to go and seek the Father in prayers. Something that we as modern disciples should think upon and reflect...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ok, that's all I have for now. May these help you to think more about Him

on questions about biblical meditation
heh heh, my friend's turn to lead Bible Study yesterday. He chose an old book which he bought a couple of years back (but didn't finished reading) to share about biblical meditation.
The session raised more questions than answers because:
1) My friend hasn't had the time to finish reading through the whole book, so he could only gave a gist of it :p;
2) Some portions which he read to us sounded more like secular teachings about positive thinking and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and those portions my friend read didn't exactly give much scriptural references.
However, we did come away with quite a number of interesting questions, which provokes more thought about the spiritual discipline of biblical meditation. Here's sharing them with you. I'll give my thoughts and answers in a separate entry, so as not to lead you thinking on this. :p

he concept of having a picture in your mind as work toward your goals goes all the way back to the Old Testament. In Genesis 13:14-17 the Lord appears to Abraham (who at that point was still known as Abram) and says, “Look as far as you can see in every direction. I am going to give all this land to you and your offspring as a permanent possession. And I am going to give you so many descendants that, like dust, they cannot be counted! Take a walk in every direction and explore the new possessions I am giving you.”
Talk about having a clear picture in your mind of where it is you are going. I don’t think the Lord could have made it any clearer than that. But there was one problem – Abram didn’t have any descendants and he was getting older. With a wife who was barren, all he had to hold on to was a picture and a promise from God. It was many years later when that picture began to take the shape of reality for Abram. It is my earnest belief that God gave him that picture so he would stay motivated and wouldn’t lose heart.
Years later, in Genesis 37, Abraham’s great-grandson Joseph began having a series of God-given dreams. On more than one occasion he dreamed that his brothers would one day bow down to him. For the eleventh son out of twelve, the concept was ridiculous. Even his father, who favored Joseph, grew angry with him when he shared his dream. The dream was even part of what prompted his ten older brothers to sell him into slavery. Thirteen years, one long prison sentence, and one life-threatening famine later, Joseph’s dream came true when he was number two to Pharaoh in
Both Abraham and Joseph were given pictures to hold on to as a way of staying motivated for the long gap of time between receiving the pictures and receiving what those pictures represented. The reasons for this is probably the same reason God occasionally take His sweet time before letting us realize our dream as well: We must become ready to receive the picture and fulfill the dream.
The Process of Becoming
It’s the same with us. We are constantly in the process of becoming. We have no control over that. We do, however, control who it is we become. Many times we must be made ready for what lies ahead before we can receive it. Sure, we can start with a picture of what it is we want and what it is we believe God wants for us. But just because we hold a picture in our mind doesn’t mean we are ready for it.
Before I (Michael) married – or even met –
Actually, He did answer that prayer. I just didn’t like the answer I was waiting. Not many of us like to be told “not yet”. At first that answer can seem even worse than a no. At least with a no you can give up hope, grieve the death of a dream, and move on to something else. With a “not yet”, you are forced to wait. And you will wait in vain if you do not actively work on the art of becoming.
Becoming what? you may ask. Becoming who you want to be, who God wants you to be, and who you need to be before some of these huge pieces can start coming together in your life. I am not talking about outward things here. I am talking about matters of the heart. This sense of becoming is an inward process - one that is centered on your growth in Christ and your character. It is not about who you appear to be about who you really are. When it comes down to it, most of us will admit that there have been moments during our twenties where we looked in the mirror and wondered who we are.
Sure we all want to feel grown-up and like we have it all put together. But deep down there are many moments when we don’t feel like we have any of that. WE don’t know who we are. We have only a vague idea of where we want to go, but most of the time we don’t have the slightest idea of how to get there. Moments like this are excellent starting places for the process of becoming. You can’t really become anything authentic when you are pretending you are something you are not, so these brief windows of vulnerability are good for your souls.
Many times it is in the moments we have the least amount of clarity about what we are supposed to do, and what we should do, that we can be the most honest about what it is we really want to do. The process of becoming goes hand in hand with the concept of dreaming. In order to become you have to dream wide. Although I certainly don’t have all of the answers, I can offer a few suggestions on how to jump-start the becoming process in your life…

on a scary after-thought...
However, this story does have a happy ending - God turned this man around and led him to repentance from his old ways. The man was the first to lead his wife out by the hand, and held his arms around her shoulders in an altar call session. In his e-mail to my pastor*, the man shared that God Himself resurrected the once-dead marriage, and he now loves his wife.
So what's my scary after-thought?
Well, it's uplifting to hear testimonies like this. But it also make me wonder: Abba, how can you let the woman suffer for ten over years in such a loveless relationship? And for that matter, why did You allow the man to go down that path? Why, Lord, WHY?
Hmmm, even as I was blogging down this question, I was reminded of Nebuchadnezzar from Daniel 4. I guess in the end, the important thing is to remember that the Lord brings glory to Himself in all our sufferings. What we think as impossible, it is possible with God. And whatever we deemed as losses and pains, He sees and will repay us beyond our wildest imagination**.
* My pastor read his e-mail over the pulpit with the man's permission.
** Go read Joel 2, the whole of it.

on a hot and lazy saturday morning~
was supposed to wake up early to go jogging just now. But woke up too early at my normal time (ard 5-vish) and promptly went back to sleep. Next time opened my eyes, is at 7am liao. Decided to nap a tad more. Bad move, next time i woke up is when my watch alarm went off at 8am. :D By that time, the sun is up blazing hot, too hot to jog. So decided to horse around online and played some games. Probably be going out later to go look at a photography exhibition, as well as go catch a film. Think I hadn't caught a big-screen film for ages, due to the drought of films. Allo weekend, here I come!~ :D

on Chasing The Proper Triad
|
It’s instructive that a book entitled The Road Ahead should be written by Bill Gates. In another generation a spiritual leader would have written it. Or perhaps a political leader. Today it is a businessman who shows us the road ahead. It is indicative of the degree that business has taken over the popular mindset. September 11th forced us to look at other human values for a little while. But now it’s beginning to look very much like business as usual.
I am not anti-business. My primary fear is that the culture of business has crept into so many other dimensions of life, far beyond the market-place. I see this phenomenon in how churches define themselves.
So many churches today define success and greatness by the 3 “Bs” – Bodies, Bricks and Budget. How can we tell if a church is a great church?
- By its size. How many members does it have? (Bodies)
- By its facilities. Does it have an up-to-date, modern plant? (Bricks)
- By its giving and expenditure. Is its annual budget bigger than the GDP of some developing countries? (Budget)
Now I am a realist. I too want to see the church touch as many lives as possible. And since the lord has created us with bodies, we need some real estate within which to function. We are not bodiless spirits. And we do need money to function. But are the three “Bs” the most important concerns in the mind of Christ?
When we turn to the New Testament, we see Paul very concerned for a different triad. Instead of bodies, bricks and budget, Paul is concerned for faith in Christ; love for all the brethren; and faith for what is laid up for the saints in heaven (Colossians 1:4, 5). This is Paul’s list for what should be core values for the
- Faith
- Love
- Hope
And if he were forced to make a choice he would put “love” as the most important (1 Corinthians 13: 13)
I can just hear him saying: “If you have the biggest membership in the land but have no love… If you have the best facility in the country but have no love… If you have the largest ministry budget in the world but have no love…”
Maybe it has to do with the dynamics of scale. But many large churches strike me more as successful business entities – well organized, driven by all the right programmes, managed by objectives… yet strangely cold and impersonal. Of course there are large churches with excellent house groups led by very compassionate leaders. Yet, if you find yourself in one it is often with the sense of serendipity.
I am no romantic that hearkens back to some early era in church life. Every era of the church has been beset by its own set of problems. However, I can’t help but be haunted by the fact that the early church had little by way of bricks and budget. Yet it won over most of the known world in a relatively short time. I was also struck by the fact that the communal life of the church was such that it forced one of her critics to say,” see how they love one another”.
Some of our churches today may be blessed by the three “Bs”. But can we still cause our critics to be amazed at the level of love within our midst?
Maybe we need to step back and take a long hard look at the degree to which we have been influenced by the business model of doing church. Maybe we need to decide afresh what are the fundamentals of church life.
And if we have goals and objectives they should address the proper triad.
The world has more than its fair share of successful big businesses. It is looking for spiritual reality, for communities that exhibit a robust and lively faith in God. It is looking for communities that are not bound to things only of this world but who share the joyful, energizing secret that here is a better world a’coming.
Above all, the world is dying to experience the love of a loving God through the love of those who claim to follow him.

on Go Take A Nap
By any account it was a tough day at the office for Elijah (1 Kings 18). First there was the day-long show-down with the prophets of Baal. Interesting odds – 1:850.
Then there was the waiting for God to come through, to burn up the drenched bull. God came through and that led to the slaughter of the false prophets. So much blood.
But the day was not over. There was to be the encounter with Ahab. And the prophecy of rain when there was no rain cloud in sight. The rain came and Elijah had to outrun Ahab’s chariot back to Jezreel. Like I said, a hard day at the office. A couple of lifetimes’ drama squeezed into 12 hours.
Since Elijah was a man just like us (James 5:17), he was tired. Very tired. And it showed. 1 Kings 19 records classical symptoms of fatigue and burnout:
- Fear (v.3).
- Depression (v.4).
- Isolation (v.10).
- Loss of faith.
What was God’s reaction to His tired servant? Did He ask Elijah to pray more? Fast? No. Essentially, God’s prescription for His exhausted servant was a regime of sleeping and eating (1 Kings 19: 5-8). Later, God would give Elijah a reality check and fresh instructions. But God’s first response was to let a tired man sleep.
I have preached on this passage often. Mainly because I have gone down the Elijah road often. But also because I see fatigue endemic in modern society. Ask about anyone you know how he or she feels and you know what his or hers answer will be. For a time we fool ourselves that we are just going through a particularly demanding week, and that next week will be better. Soon we come to accept that constant fatigue is part of life in the new millennium.
It would appear that the very machines that were supposed to aid us and improve the quality of our lives are the very things driving us deeper and deeper into fatigue. With the advent of the electric light bulb, night is no longer a time to shut down and rest. And the World Wide Web means we can work 24/7 if we want to. More and more of us feel we have to in the highly-competitive global economy.
The thing is, even when we have time to ourselves, it is still hard to sleep. Often we worry about what may be and we conjure up images of worst-case scenarios. So not only are our lives occupied, they are also preoccupied with things yet to be which may never be. Indeed, in some companies paranoia is part of the company culture.
What is perhaps more tragic is that church life is no source of respite. More and more churches are functioning on the basis of management by objectives, defining themselves and their members by their productivity. I have lost count of the number of Christians who have told me that often they cannot tell the difference between their companies and their churches in terms of the demand to perform.
In the world and in the church then, rest gets no respect. And most of us are running around with a serious rest/sleep debt. Does this worry you? It should.
In his book, Sleep Thieves, Stanley Coren estimates that “Each year, sleep-related errors and accidents cost the United States over $56 billion, cause nearly 25,000 deaths, and result in over 2.5 million disabling injuries.“
Why should this surprise us? Everytime we tinker with God’s pattern we reap the consequences. The creation pattern was six days of work, one day of rest. It is not a matter of pitting rest vs. work but rather an embracing of the intimate relationship between work and rest.
We were meant to live our lives with a rhythm of work and rest, work and rest. Of course we can only live like that if we trust that God is on His throne and is taking care of us.
If the weight of our lives is in our own hands, then we will be driven by fear and we need to work as hard as we can to remain in the game. But if we really believe that we have a heavenly Father who is watching out for us, we can work when it is time to work, and rest when it is time to rest. We can be free to get the rest we need.
If anyone had reason to worry and lose sleep, it should have been David in Psalm 3. He was surrounded by a myriad of foes. Yet he could hit the sack at night and sleep because he was secure in the care and love of his sovereign Lord. “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.” (v.5 NRSV)
As we faced the end of the year, which means holiday time in my part of the world, I hope you will make time for the rest you need.
And maybe our churches need to set aside days for eating and sleeping alongside days of fasting and praying. In the times we live in, both will require faith.

on a great sms prayer I received this week...
"There's something beautiful about shyness... Shy people have long shadows where they keep much of their beauty hidden from intruders' eyes... They invite us to reverent and respectful friendships and to a wordless being together in love - Nouwen
LORD, help us this day to find beauty in things the world overlooks"
May this be your prayer too!~

The Hammer Holds - Bebo Norman
Saw the lyrics on one of my contacts' blog posting. Pretty much ministered by the words. may it blesses your day too!
A shapeless piece of steel, that's all I claim to be.
This hammer pounds to give me form, this flame, it melts my dreams
I glow with fire and fury, as I'm twisted like a vine
My final shape, my final form I'm sure I'm bound to find
So dream a little, dream for me in hopes that I'll remain
And cry a little, cry for me so I can bear the flames
And hurt a little, hurt for me my future is untold
But my dreams are not the issue here, for they, the hammer holds
And the water, it cools me gray, and the hurt's subdued somehow
I have my shape, this sharpened point, what is my purpose now?
And the question still remains, what am I to be?
Perhaps some perfect piece of art displayed for all to see
So dream a little, dream for me in hopes that I'll remain
And cry a little, cry for me so I can bear the flames
And hurt a little, hurt for me my future is untold
But my dreams are not the issue here, for they, the hammer holds
The hammer pounds again, but flames I do not feel
This force that drives me, helplessly, through flesh, and wood reveals
A burn that burns much deeper, it's more than I can stand
The reason for my life was to take the life of a guiltless man
So dream a little, dream for me in hopes that I'll remain
And cry a little, cry for me so I can bear the pain
And hurt a little, hurt for me, my future is so bold
But my dreams are not the issue here, for they, the hammer holds
This task before me may seem unclear
But it, my maker holds

on a ministering CG session...
After dinner, we started CG proper. It was a simple yet profound lesson that my friend brought us through, on the Beatitudes and being salt of the earth. I guess one thing which I draw from this is we are not to compromise on our identity as the salt of the earth; if we lose our saltiness, then all we really be good for is to be trampled on by the world.
