CG Lunch Prayer.MP4

Tradition for our CG leader to give thanks for the food. :D

CG Christmas Lunch (26 Dec '11)

Had a simple lunch gathering at the Tans' new place in Yishun. Loved the way they decorated their new home. Their cat was pretty shy and wary of us though. Even though it's supposed to be simple gathering, we brought a lot of food to the table, and so it was feasting. Too busy eating and not enough photo-taking which resulted in this meagre crop of photos. :P

Got invited to one of best food parties. Ever. People kept coming, kept piling food on the table, and the eating never stops. Ergo, the low number of pictures. I feel like I've eaten enough to last me all the way to Chinese New Year. Time to hit the running tracks again.

Haiz, another one of those growing up shows. Really plays on nostalgia and sentimentalism. And really a lot of Taiwanese 闽南话 jokes. Quite crude at certain parts. Yet I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Despite after 2 weeks of running the film in the theater, the show I went to was fully packed!

My friend told me to go visit this newly opened Western food stall near his home. Tried the lamb steak with macaroni and cheese, and garden salad. The garden was kinda disappointing, only 2-3 leaves of cabbage with thousand island sauce with black and white sesame seeds. It was nice, just kinda too small. The macaroni with cheese is pretty good; not your normal instant cheese gravy. But the lamb steak with the mushroom sauce and hint of mint is to die for! i sat down there for 30 minutes cleaning the bones of their meat. Worth going back again!

on thoughts of the Circle line break down

Needed to get into office early on Tuesday to take an overseas conference call. Woke up earlier than usual to take public transport via SMRT ( Singapore Mass Rapid Transport, Singapore's subway/metro system). All was well till we reached the interchange station at Bishan. Sudden;y see the SMRT staff started putting up notices and announcements to say the Circle line had some problems; but part of the line is still serviceable.

My destination was 4 stations away (at Tai Seng), but the line only runs up till the 3rd station (Bartley). Since there wasn't much of a distance between the 3rd and the 4th stations. I figured i just ride till Bartley and then take alternative transport to office. Good plan, right?

But nooooo, the MRT Circle line was actually experiencing much more problems. We were forced to disembark at the 2nd station. Good thing SMRT decided to provide shuttle bus services to ferry people to their destinations along the train stations' route. In the end, i was only 5 minutes late (but the first one to reach the office ). My team mate came in about 5 minutes after; but she also experienced what I went through from the other end of the island. Our boss didn't make it till after 2 hours he got out of his house. Considering you only need slightly under 2 hours to drive around the island of Singapore, this gives you an idea of the seriousness of the break down in public transport.

Certain thoughts and observations arose out of the whole experience:

1) Small-mindedness of the average Singaporean
A lot of people were trying to squeeze onto the shuttle buses. You see people running ahead of people to try to squeeze onto the buses. Most of the young people sat down and did not give up their seats to the elderly. And generally there was a lot of complaining and discontent and ire, with some shouted comments of  "Why you so stupid? You blocking the way and people cannot exit la".

Well, I'm not saying we try to turn this into a field day or picnic or something. But come on, everybody is being affected by the public transport outage. What makes you bad day any worse than the rest of ours? If you can't make the trip any faster with your frowns and rant, then at least keep your peace la.

I can think of worse things that could have happened:

a) a sewage pipe broke while on the SMRT commute, and you can't get out. (eeewwwwwww)
b) the electricity outage happened and electrocutes the whole train (think of those UV light electric fly traps... BBBZZZ!!!)^
c) sarin gas attack (though in Singapore it'll be more of flatulence attack)

2) Efficiency of the SMRT staff
The SMRT staff were pretty quick and efficient to provide help and assistance. Yes, no doubt it was SMRT who cocked-up.* Still, you must give credit to their staff for reacting promptly. Some of the staff were not even in their uniform yet (it as that early in the morning, and I guessed they haven't reached their duty stations). But they also participated in the ushering of crowds and giving help when needed.

3) The government response
Well, the government is stepping in to investigate on this outage of public service. I'm guessing it's going to follow the previous patterns ('cos not the first time) where the private company would be penalized by a hefty fine to the government coffers.

Honestly, I'm more inclined to have the government make the private company implement a WEEK of FREE public transport on the SMRT trains.(Not a day, cos that's only minuscule operations, and "peanuts"** to them; and not a month, cos we don't want to make SMRT bankrupt and fold).

If also possible, punish the owners of SMRT by making them squeeze onto a single carriage while forcing them to eat garlic and onions before boarding, and then trapped them underground for say an hour). Make them feel the pain of the public.

okay, i think i'm done with my "complaint-thinly-veiled-as-social-constructive-critique". Gotta go grab lunch.

^by the way, not from any of those Final Destination or Saw movies, purely original thought I had.

*Now I'm intrigued. Can any of my English users friends tell me, can I verb-ify "cock-up"? I always though it was more of a noun...

** Singaporeans always snigger when you mention "peanuts". Go ask them for the context.

Haven't caught a Japanese film in a while, so jumped at the chance to catch this. on what is love?

Last Friday morning, my friend shared during office devotions on his experience and thought while taking part in his church 40 day program to love their neighbors. And one of the statement he uttered was "What is love?" And when he said that, I immediately recall the famous skit by Jim Carrey and gang

See vid at here

And while i was chuckling to myself, I did have some thoughts on what is love

1) Love is relational
Like what my friend shared, love can be communal, when you love thy neighbor as thyself. It also has to be between two parties, the lover and the beloved. Hence love is relational.

2) Love is sensual
Yeaps, love is physical and sensual. It's not only just touch and feel, but it involves sight, smell and hearing as well. Just go read Song of songs. However, there is a tendency in today's world to confuse sex with love. Not just among the young, but across all ages.

3) Love is practical
Yeaps, love is not just intellectual or metaphysical ("In your headdddd, it's in your heeeaadddd"). If you love somebody, you will definitely want to show your love in tangible forms. Thus the age of question "Do you love me?" never gets old...

4) Love is volitional.
Love, or Love not. There is no in-between, Choose wisely one must. Hrrrmmmm <(^!^ )>

5) Love is theological
We love, because He first love us. Nuff said.

A feel good, light fluffy comedy. Great for de-stress. Great to see Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts on-screen again. The other actors are great too. Makes me wanna go learn how to ride a Vespa :p

The Beaver (2011)

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama
Er, Mel Gibson didn't have to work very hard in this role,; guess he was just being himself? A man going through depression and crisis, who found his voice through animating a puppet beaver. The one question that was going through my mind was: what if Mel's character had found an Elmo muppet instead?

Would this be retitled "Mad Elmo"?! rofl.

Short trek along the railway (03 Jul '11)

After lunch, decided to try out the trek along the ex-KTM rail. wasn't wearing proper footwear though; so felt a thousand years of pain as walked just now. And the weather! But it was fun to see other trekkers along the way, A trek down memory lane, literally.

My friend "bung" me "ber gi"*, so can't run to ECP later. Thinking of running back to Bishan MRT via Bradell road. Mapped the run from MapMyRun.com and it said it's only 6km. Hopefully won't appear on the headlines of news tomorrow :P

Lunch at Parkway Parade (28 Jun '11)

After the exercise, headed over to Parkway Parade for a scrumptuous meal. It's been a long time since i last ate there, after we shifted office away Chai Chee. Missed the mee siam, grass jelly and durian ice-cream. There goes my effort from the mid-day exercise though...
