Oriole Cafe and Bar

Rating:★★★★
Category:Restaurants
Cuisine: Eclectic
Location:96 Sommerset Road Level 1, #01-01/05, Pan Pacific Serviced Suites
Went to have dinner with some friends at the new restaurant at the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites (just opposite the Singapore Powers Building). Ambiance was pretty good, the music wasn't overbearingly loud; service was adequate, as I think the crew is still new. Food was delicious, albeit the serving was a bit tiny. The restaurant had one-for-one wine promotion (by the glass) before 8pm. The selection of wine was alright (though my other friends enjoyed the wine greatly). I ordered the honeycombed affogatto, tres delicieux!~

More of a 3.5 outta 5 for moi, rather than 4.

一个字,赞!Didn't watch this when it came out in the big theaters, cos tot it was gonna be a over-hyped romance film. Then heard from my friend it';s more than that. So "kar cheow" another friend to borrow the dvd from his friend. Wonderful show! Rather than label it as a romance show, I think more correctly to see it as a show about love and 思恋. Great songs and music. Ah gong really steals the show. Oh, better turn on the subtitles, cos got a lot of 闽南语.

Boss Alarm

hahahaha!~ Power!

on funny moments about the cine-goers while watching K-20...

Just three only, but it made the film-watching all the more enjoyable...

1) ok, me and my friends while sitting at one corner of the theatre. We were the first to enter the theatre, so we sorta get to see everybody that come after us. In front us came a group of women, four of them, who seems to be aged from their mid twenties to late thirties. They were just chatting amongst themselves, snacking, catching up while in their seats, fine, that's what most moviegoers do, right?

The funny part comes after the theatre darkens and the film started. The first instant they saw Takeshi Kaneishiro on screen, they gave a squeal* of delight. Suddenly there was this, this radiance of happiness and joy coming forth from them. And that's just only because 金城武 was onscreen. My friend was so affected by their happiness that she joined in and clapped her hands happily**. Later, after the show, I asked her why she clapped her hands; she said because "can't you feel the happiness when Takeshi appear?" XD

2) Again, this is about the women's reaction while they were watching the movie. There's this one scene where Takeshi and Matsu Takako was hanging in mid air. When that scene was being played onscreen, I can hear this soft but audible sigh coming from the four women in front of me. Either they were mooning over Takeshi, or they were imagining themselves that they were in Takako's place, being caught in the embrace of Takeshi...

3) ok, the final one is about this guy who was seated besides me. Throughout the show, he had his cap on his head. (?!) Weird, just plain weird...

Well, these are some reason why I still go to the theatre, where you can catch drama off-screen as well as on-screen. :p

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*A very controlled one, not that loud that everybody can heard them. But because my friends and myself were seated directly behiund them. We can hear them :P

** also in a very controlled manner, I must stress.. XD

Chinatown Dinner Outing (18 Feb '09)

Went out with some secondary school friends for dinner last night. Was there much earlier prior to the appointment, so went for a round of desserts on my own first :p Made a boo-boo in the order; the Chinese waiter was irritated at first but still accommodated to my request to change the order. Xp Moral of the story: "Mai gei kiang" - check menu first before ordering.

After meeting up with my friends, we adjourned to a "zhi-char" place for dinner. Not our first choice, but still had good food and great time chit-chatting and catching up. XD

P.S. after tofu was served, too buzy with eating to take more pics... XD

Dinner at Cafe Galilee (13 Feb '09)

Just too many people at Causeway Point, so hauled my friend to the library at Civics Centre for a quick bite before going for CG. He ordered the fish and chips. I was still overstuffed from the Botak Jones the previous night, so decided to go poultry instead of fish. However, the teriyaki sauce the Cafe Galilean staff used for the teriyaki 1/2 chicken was a tad over-powering... Xp

Random shots on Carpark rooftop (13 Feb '09)

Had some time to kill while waiting for my friend at Commonwealth MRT station on Friday evening. ON a whim, decided to climb all the way to the rooftop garden above the multi-storeyed carpark opposite the MRT station. Just some random shots.

on playing a zero-sum game with exercising and eating

ok, so this is what's happening for the past three days:

Tues night
Eat Carl's Junior dinner

Wed noon
Went to the swimming pool and hit 12 laps
Went to office badminton session for 2 hours

Wed night
Had Botak Jones for dinner

This morning
Had Chai Tau Kway 菜头粿 for breakfast

Later
Go gym for a quick session at the gym

hmmmm, sounds pretty much like a zero-sum game

hmm, i think my new motto should be "Keep fit to eat, and eat to keep fit"...

P.S. Scrapping the gym session, cos my foot still hurts from the badminton session. Hmm, the scales are tipping in one direction. :p

Botak Jones Dinner (11 Feb '09)

This evening, it's my friend's turn to have craving. We walked all the way after our badminton session to Bedok's Botak Jones. Had a really, REALLY filling meal of fish and chips. Man, totally stuffed on fried fish!

My friends had the Guacamole Bacon Burger and the Chiil Cheese Burger, while I had the Potobello Mushroom Burger. Changed two of the regular fries to one Criss-cut and one Fried Zucchini. As you ca ntell, we had a feast, ay CARAMBA! XD

on throwing mandarin oranges on Zhup Gor Meh

haha, today is the fifteenth day of the Chinese Lunar New Year. It is the official last day of celebration by tradition, and most reckoned to be the day of Chinese Valentine's Day. So just now, on the way back, my colleague asked me what was my plan for tonight. I said go home accompany mother la.  She said, "Sure or not? Never go to lakeside and throw mandarin orange ah?" Made me blur a while. Then she explained to me apparently it's an obscure Chinese custom, along the lines of what I will term weird courting rituals of the ancient days. That piqued my interest. So I turn to my great Answer to the Everything* and typed in Chinese to search for  plausible reasons. It came back with the following results:

(Eh the above link didn't give the full picture clearly so I tried again.)

(eh, this link was a "wall of text" reply. But the answer wasn't very "satisfying" too)

Finally, I searched in English and voila!~ this is the perfect answer (and local some more!)

Office Chinese New Year Party (06 Feb '09)

Had a wonderful time over lunch celebrating the Chinese New Year with our friends from around the region. "Huat ah, huat"!

on failing my Eye Pee Pee Teh, huat ah!

XD

My friends are all pretty amused, by how I am rejoicing over my failure.

Not bad leh, at 89 kilo with my burgeoning waistline, I can still do 40 sit-ups! Am really amused by that fact. Of course, with the additionmal body weight, my pull-ups , standing board and my shuttle run suffered tremendously. Ah well, give thanks in all things! HooT! HuaT aH~!

Bride Wars (2009)

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Comedy
Eh, more of a 2.5 for moi. Plot was really less than wafer thin, even for a chick flick. Gags and some of the lines were funny though. Kate and Anne's limelight was not overshadowed by the superb antics of Candice Bergen ("Murphy Brown") or Kristen Johnston ("3d Rock from the Sun). Come to think of it, the actresses' casting was quite strong, which was probably why I expected mroe out of this.

On which is better, a godly sinner or an ungodly saint?

Neither! It is better to be a Godly saint, and not be ungodly

My church just spent the month of January going through the theme of holiness in a person's life. One thing that struck me when the pastors were preaching over the pulpit, was the point that it is possible for a church-going believer who does, says and thinks all the things and yet be still considered "ungodly" if he or she does not live with the consciousness/knowledge of God's will in the person's life. More than reference to God's will, the pastors impressed upon us the need to live in deference to God's will.

And as usual, my mind spins off in tangential thinking. On which is better, a "sinner" who lives with the consciousness that God can redeem and transform him; or to be a Christian/"saint" living without the presence of God...

on growing four inches to my girth...

Took leave on Monday, to get over the tiredness of Chinese New Year week. Decided (after thinking long and hard) to finally go for the Levis jeans' offer. Took an old pair of jeans and went to a Levi's shop inside Isetan at Shaw House. Great shopping on Monday early afternoon, there's was no one to jostle with and I took time to just walk around. The salesgirl was very helpful, and helped with all my questions. She asked me what size I liked to try for fitting, and I just gave my old waist size.

Went inside the fitting room, and tried to squeeze into them; but they couldn't fit! Finally asked the salesgirl for a measuring tape, and measured my own waits. To my horror of horrors, I am now a size 36!!! *Theatrical sigh* This is what comes from "sinful" binging on beer and "bah kwa"...  Ah well, the Lord gives^ and He takes away^^, but still blessed be the Name,,,

^ me a bigger waistline & tummy, which in some societies are a sign of prosperity and good health

^^ my slim physique

on tuts my barreh... (PG)

Hilarious. Probably an English teacher's nightmare*, but still hilarious...

on bad vibes about this coming IPPT...

Had a weird dream last night. Dreamt I was taking IPPT with my colleague, Aaron*. We were at the sit-ups station. He was to do it before me, so I helped him to count. He managed to just scrape the passing mark of doing 30 sit-ups in 1 minute.

Come to my turn, I just couldn't get up! Even though my friend tried to count for me, I was doing the "chao keng" sit-ups, more like you know, crunches.  then at the end, the PTI came over and told me I had to re-do~

Then I woke up. Well, i'm pretty amused by it, so won't call it a nightmare. I'm sure it's pretty "prophetic" in the sense I will fail my IPPT, 'cos I haven't been training at all for it. Ah well, one reaps what one sows~

*Dunno why it's him. I mean he's the last person I would think of taking IPPT with together.
