From the beginning to the end, this feels like one long exposition on the turmoil years of China in the first half of the 20th Century. I'm okay with my Chinese modern history, and thus was able to appreciate more the nuances and artistic liberties taken within this film. Though an old film (around 10 years), it is still a very much watchable film. The actresses were good in their portrayal of the historical figures (albeit a bit over-glamorised).

The only thing i can't stand was the horrid way the film was chopped up to accommodate all the advertisements on national air-time. I guess the TV stations have to get their revenue. But to drag out a 2-hour-20-minute film over a near 3 hour time slot is a bit tiring for the viewer...
