on forgiveness

Ha, my friend sent me an sms this morning:

Forgiving doesn't mean forgetting... But forgiveness changes the way we remember it. It converts curse into blessings. Forgiveness allows us to claim our own power and not let events destroy us.

Motivational, inspirational, wise... but not enough, in my understanding. I think we forgive one another, not because we are forgiving by nature, but because we are forgiven creatures. If we truly understand the depths of which we are forgiven, for our sins against a Holy, Just and Righteous God, then surely we would not withhold forgiveness from others who seek it from us.

I reminded again of this in the prayer which Lord Jesus taught to all his disciples:

"Our Father in heaven,
   hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
   your will be done
   on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
   as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from the evil one
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen."
