To all my brothers and sisters in Christ out there,
Just a sharing on something I read in the Scriptures this morning.
1 Peter 1:12 - 21 (NIV) reads:
Prophecy of Scripture
12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
16We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."[a] 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
19And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

3 points I glean from this passage.
1. We have a very short-term memory of the goodness of our Lord Jesus in our lives.
Prior to this passage, the apostle Peter was talking about making one's calling and election sure (in 1 Peter 1:3 - 11), and increasing in our knowledge of God. What struck me are the words " I will always remind you" (verse 12) and "you will always be able to remember" (verse 15).
Indeed we are so forgetful that we can come out from a time of consecration feeling on spiritual high; and yet return to our workplace, our family, our schools the next day with a humdrum and lethargic sense of purpose. Praise and thanks be to God that there are always other brothers and sisters around us, who will remind us and refresh our memory that we are to live everyday with a sense of God's presence in our lives. We are to live our lives sure of our callings and elections from the Lord, so that we can "participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires." (1 Peter 1:3b)
2. We are eyewitnesses of Christ's majesty (verse 16b)
Our faith is not based on cleverly invented stories (verse 16a), propaganda made to tailor to consumerist trends in the post-modern society that will just bring people into the church, so that our camp have more people than other camps on this earth. Rather, our faith consist of knowing of the power and coming of our Lord Jesus, through the things He has done, He is doing and He will do in our lives.
For those of us who have believed, surely we have witnessed of this in our community, as we hear of the testimonies of how our Lord has transformed the lives of others. I am reminded again today by this passage, that as an eyewitness, I am not only to proclaim His message, but to have faith in the message that He is making me spread to others.
3. Prophecy never had its origin in the will of men, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (verse 21)
Many a times we question the message brought to us by our leaders, our pastors and even our fellow brothers and sisters in the church, when we don't like what we hear. We don't like what we hear either because we don't understand it^, or because it disturbs our status quo*. We might even at times feel that is the messenger's "twisting of God's words" to make us believe in the messenger's personal agenda.
I'm reminded through this verse that prophecy ( in the sense of fulfillment of God's words and truth) can never, ever be accomplished by in the will of men (verse 21a). Whatever started as things of men will never stand in His eternal plans.
Also, there will be other people affirming your words, if they are truly from the Lord. If the remnant of God stays true to Him and is "carried along by the Holy Spirit", He will give His words not only to one person, but to a few. I believe that this is so that it cannot be said that glory has come to this one person, because of the things he or she has prophesied. Rather, all glory will be given to God, as He has revealed His truth to the few of us privileged to be messengers.
Finally, all these things can only be done by empowerment from on-high. If we are walking closely with God, the Holy Spirit will tell us if the messages we receive are indeed divine wake-up calls. Therefore, we must believe that the Holy Spirit can make us understands all things in God's will, if only we surrender our will and ask humbly for Him to show us.
May you be blessed by God through this sharing. :>
