WoodMan Is Incredible

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/456394
For all who played this back in the 80s/90s when Nintendo/NES/Famicom was all the rage, and Rockman/Megaman 2 was the in thing...

on spending "me day"...

Woke up at 7am this morn, cos awakened up my old faithful alarm on the mobile phone. Switched it off and went back to sleep. Next time I knew when I opened my eyes again, it's near 10am! Shucks, and the weather was so bright and good some more ~ there goes the trip to the swimming pool... Got up, had some coffee, chatted to mom and bro, read some papers and mopped some floor. Then decided had to get out of the house after lunch. Last weekend never got to go our, because of the rain on Saturday and serving in the church celebrations on Sunday. Decided to head down to town and walk around a bit, as well as get a gift for a friend.

On the spur, decided to go watch a foreign-language film. Read about the synopsis online, and was quite intrigued by the plot. After buying the tickets, on my way out of the cinema, saw the extra large poster of a film which one of my friends wanna jio people to go watch.

I already replied her before this that after seeing the ad in the papers, I do not think I wanna spend weekend cinema rates on this film. Seeing the poster in full vibrant colors only confirm my resolution of not watching it :D

Oh, and Wall.E's fever is on! Saw this ultra-cutesy poster cut-out of Wall.E and decided to snap a hot.

Back to the reason why I need to shop. We were supposed to give a small gift to another colleague unknowingly during our company retreat, and be a secret encourager. Unfortunately, I didn't know my "encouragee" very well. Thus I told him I will only give him the gift later. :P After finding out some info from others who knew him better, I knew what to get for him. So I went browsing around HMV. Didn't managed to get what I wanted for him; furthermore, spent additional precious "moolah" on the Bruni album. :P

After that, head to my haunt at Ngee Ann City for a refreshing cup of frothy lemon tea. I think they increased the price again. !@#@#$%% but the texture and the coolness of the lemon tea is really something. So I parted with the additional $.025 ungrudgingly. Decided to finish up the rest of the Arden book; as well as read some of the Tim Wright's book. Love the way the Bishop writes about worship. Mebbe will post some snippets of it later...

After that, headed back to the cinema and watched the show. Got more shots of Wall.E and EVE together

Received an sms during the show - another friend had to cancel dinner appointment. So I change plans and head to Plaza Singapura. Had dinner first, as I was famished by then. Bought the gift for the encouragee and head on home. Bumped into someone whom I hadn't met up with for a while. Chatted with her like say 3 minutes, before parting ways to catch the long long ride back home via MRT. Well, she just caught Wall.E and told me it's a nice film, very "sweet" despite the lack of a dialogue. Hmm, better go get tickets now...

Was browsing among the CDs at HMV, when my eyes fell upon this. Listened to a few songs in passing and quite liked it, so I bought it. Came home and researched on the singer. Only then did I realised it's THE Carla Bruni. :P Her voice is not bad, and the music is relaxing; now I gotta brush up on my long forgotten French to appreciate the lyrics...

Nice Mexican film. At first I thought it was a Spanish film, cos it was advertised to be in Spanish. The story revolves around eating. Without giving too much of the plot away, it has interesting camera angles, heart-tugging moments and thought-provoking questions about the modern society's views on eating, fidelity and parent-child relationship. :p

Sending off the Lykins (29 Aug '08)

Went to stay overnight at the airport from last night, as didn't want to spend the money on cab-fare. Had to keep eating to stay awake, as our friends had to catch a red-eyed flight back to the States... The kids and the dog were well-behaved, and that is a great comfort to the parents. We'll be missing their sunny smiles...

Farewell to the Lykins (27 Aug '08)

We held an appreciation for one of our missionary families, who'll be going back to the main office in the United States. It was a bittersweet moment, as we'll be missing our friend. Yet we also rejoice with him that he's going where the Lord is leading him and his household.

P.S. Kudos to Billy for sending us more pics

on laughter being the bets medicine...

hmm, it's been so long since I last took up the pen and scribe. Wunder if i still got it... :P Well, here goes~

Outing to Swensen's (25 Aug '08)

Yesterday we treated one of our missionary families to a good meal at Swensen's. They're heading back to the States this weekend, and we wanted to spend some time appreciating them with food and fellowship. Left my camera back at my friend's car, so in the end, had to rely on my trusty 2-megapix SE camera phone again :p

Fun party game, plus a good work-out. We always get a good laugh when the funny characters like Wario and Luigi came onscreen. Must play in big groups. More fun watching others play than playing them by yourself.

Outing to Anatolia (24 Aug '08)

After our church 30th annivesary at Suntec Convention centre, decided to drive out as my friend had a car at her disposal. We initially wanted to try the famous chicken rice ta Far East Plaza; but there were just too many people waiting. In the end, settled for Turkish fast food at Anatolia.

Some of us decided to head out to a local shopping centre to look-see-look-see before coming back home.

on God's breath of life

(as promised, here's the context of my previous post)

...

There was something puzzling to explain, alright. Jesus' followers were clearly as puzzled by his resurrection as they had been by much of what he had been saying to them. They were unsure what they were supposed to do next. They were unclear what God was going to do next. At one point, they went back to their fishing. At another point, when they saw Jesus before he disappeared from sight for the last time, they were still asking him about whether all these strange going-ons meant that the old dream of Israel was going to come true after all. Was this the time, they asked, when Israel would receive the kingdom, would be free at last in the sense they and their contemporaries had been hoping for?

As so often, Jesus doesn't answer their question directly. Many of the questions we ask God can't be answered directly, not because God doesn't know the answers but because our questions don't make sense. As C.S. Lewis once pointed out, many of our questions are, from God's point of view, rather like someone asking, 'Is yellow square or round?' or, 'How many hours are there in a mile?'. Jesus gently puts off the question. 'It isn't for you,' he says, 'to know the times and periods which the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth' (Acts 1.6-8).

The Holy Spirit and the task of the church. The two walk together, hand in hand. We can't talk about them apart. Despite what you might think from some excitement in the last generation about new spiritual experiences, God doesn't give people the Holy Spirit in order to let them enjoy the spiritual equivalent of a day in Disneyland. Of course, if you're downcast and gloomy (or even if you're not),  the fresh wind of God's Spirit can and often does gives you a fresh perspective on everything and, above all, a sense of God's presence, love, comfort, and even joy. But the point of the Spirit is to enable those who follow Jesus to take into all the world the news that he is Lord, that he has won the vic-tory over the forces of evil, that a new world has opened up and that we are to help make it happen.

Equally, the task of the church cannot be attempted without the Spirit. I have sometimes heard Christian people talk as though, having done what he's done in Jesus, God now wants us to do our part by getting on with thing under our own steam. But that is a tragic misunderstanding. It leads either to arrogance or to burnout, or both. Without God's Spirit, there is nothing we can do that will count for God's kingdom. Without God's Spirit, the church simply can't be the church.

on a long phone sms this morning

Yea, this morning chose a large chunk to send out to my kakis:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Many of the questions we ask God can't be answered directly, not because God doesn't know the answers but because our questions don't make sense.

- From "God's breath of life" in Simply Christian by Tom Wright.

What sort of questions have you asked the Lord, or are asking Him today?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I get back all sort of replies....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ha ha.. Ok, so does the quote comes from Lewis or Wright? The Covenant safe answer would be 'Both'. Hee.."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"this is really good 1. It takes a fresh revelation of Him 2 ans such."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Cool! He surely knows which four numbers will open this week, i'll ask Him!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"thank you, bro, for that sms. it spoke to me

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ok, if I give you the context of the above passage, it'll make more sense... so watch out for the next post~

on out with the old, and in with the new!

yesterday realised I need to get myself some new sandals for the upcoming retreat.I a terrible walker, and all my footwear usually suffer horrible mutilations. I guess it's teh way i walk, always digging my heels in first.

yea, this is one of my old pair of sandals. Fake birkenstocks from Thailand that my sis bought for me

I got an even older pair, but my mom threw them away before I had a chance to take photos of them~

Yea, I really wear them out hard :p

Anyway, last night decided to go Causeway Point to shop. Walked 4 shops in 15minutes before settling down for this pair. I actually had my eyes  on a more expensive pair of Overland sandals; but they didn't have my size. So I settled down for these instead~

Hopefully, they will last me for a good year or two~

Old sandals, new sandals

Threw out the old, and bring in the new!~

God of This City - Chris Tomlin

A prayer we can all sing~

You're the God of this city
You're the King of these people
You're the Lord of this nation
You Are

Bridge:
For there is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

Chorus 1:
Greater things have yet to come
Great things are still to be done
In this city
Greater things are still to come
And greater things are still to be done here

Verse 2:
You're the Lord of Creation
The Creator of all things
You're the King above all Kings
You Are

You're the strength in our weakness
You're the love to the broken
You're the joy in the sadness
You Are

Chorus 2:
Greater things have yet to come
Great things are still to be done
In this city
Where glory shines from hearts alive
With praise for you and love for you
In this city

Greater things have yet to come
Great things are still to be done
In this city
Greater things are still to come
And greater things are still to be done here

Sing Sing Sing - Chris Tomlin

haha, my friend told me about the latest album from Chris Tomlin: This is the opening song, It Rockz!~

We will sing, sing, sing
And make music with the heavens
We will sing, sing, sing
Grateful that you hear us
When we shout your praise
Lift high the name of Jesus

What's not to love about you
Heaven and earth adore you
Kings and kingdoms bow down
Son of God
You are the One
You are the One
We're living for

You are the love that frees us
You are the light that leads us
Like a fire burning
Son of God
You are the One
You are the One
We're living for

on how to pronounce this word

haha, my friend asked me this morning on how to pronouce this Chinese word. It's not a common word used in our everyday writing, so I was stumped. I went to the most "chee na"*-native speaker I can find and asked her and lo and behold! She also doesn't know  :D We checked the dictionary but still can't seems to find it. That's when I decided to go online and found the pronunciation~

In our deepest time of need, we often turn to God in prayer to plead with Him for help. But what happens when those prayers go unanswered? Special guest Philip Yancey joins Mart De Haan, Haddon Robinson, and Alice Mathews for a special roundtable discussion. They’ll wrestle with the question the rest of us are thinking, but are afraid to ask: Is God listening?

on an e-mail that made my day...

haha, my friend wrote me the following early this morning:

"
Hi Jack,

Just looking at the pictures, thanks for uploading it.
I was wondering if your header, "Suffering and Joy may not be incompatible, but Bitterness and Joy is" makes sense or not...

It's a double negative in the first part of the sentence- Suffering and Joy may not be INcompatible (shouldn't it be compatible?), then the discourse marker- BUT makes sense in the second part of the sentence. You must drop either one of the negatives, NOT or IN in the first part of the sentence

So grammatically and logically speaking, the sentence should read: Suffering and Joy may be incompatible, but bitterness and joy is.

Anyway, it's the teacher in me just clarifying with you."

Well, I got a kick outta it cos' my friend actually bother to read the title! :D Anyway, I replied with the following:

"hahaha! Glad to hear you reply and read my blog, Princess! :D Hope you guys had a fun time yesterday.

well, the title still stands. What I "ish" saying is "Suffering and Joy is compatible, but Bitterness and Joy Isn't". I just chose to go about it the roundabout way to make you all think a bit further. ; )

This is not from my own wisdom, but from someone who shared with me that sometimes in our suffering we can still find the joy of the Lord is with us. However, in our sufferings we have a choice to be either joyful (despite the circumstances) or be bitter (because of the circumstances). Ergo, she used it in the positive expression of "Suffering and Joy is compatible, but Bitterness and Joy Isn't". I just chose to reverse it :D

Well, it's been a good exercise. Hope you are more tickled than riled, madam XXX*! :D have a great day ahead, 'cher!

In His Time (^^ >) a-jack"

Reign Over Me (2007)

Rating:★★★★

Genre: Drama
Great film. Enjoyed it thoroughly, one of the rare moments where you see Sandler in a serious dramatic role. The jokes are a bit on the "R" side. Good film, talks about male bonding, family, cope with loss of loved ones. Tugs at the heart strings. Contemporary reference - "Shadows of the Colossus" and "Love, Reign Over Me"! 阿爸天父

Well, I was remarking the other day that I didn't quite take to the mandarin songs at first in the Streams of Praise latest album. Found them to sound kitschy~ Well, as i listened to them a few times more, and grow more accustomed to the tunes, and start to listen more to the words of the lyrics, some of them actually becomes quite endearing. Here's one of songs that stuck to my head:

Lyrics taken from http://blog.xuite.net/beethoven0116/blog/17927190

You can listen to the song here

on a nice day of rest~

Woke up earlier than usual, around 4am. Think it's because I slept earlier last night. Anyway, the song "Jehovah-jireh My Provider" was ringing in my head. Think overdosed from yesterday's house cleansing party. :P Just sang the song in my head while praying through random stuff, before dropping off to sleep. Next time open my eyes, my mom was shaking me, telling me it's 7am, why am I not heading off to work. Then I told her I got off-in-lieu today.

Woke up and bid my sister goodbye. Didn't manage to catch her coming back from her KL trip last night. ASked her how come she was so late in returning home, she told me that her friend got lost driving along the way; so what was a 3-hour journey became a 5-hour journey. Well, thank God she still made it back safely.

Well, since I'm already up, decided to hit the internet and post some early replies. The sky was looking kinda weird and cloudy, wasn't sure if I could go for my swim. But then the glorious sum shone down around 8.30am, and I rode my bike to the pool for a quick dip. It was refreshingly empty - must the people fearing the 7th month thingie. Well, I'm not complaining, cos that means more space for me to swim in.

What I do wanna gripe about was that there was this couple in the pool, where the guy was trying to teach the woman to swim. Unfortunately, I think the guy wasn't professionally trained, and it looks more like a groping and pawing session. Urgh! I just did my laps pronto, and got out of the pool, before being blinded by the sight. :D Anyway, the sun began to blaze real hot, and I dun wanna be "chao tah-ed" on my ride back home.

Was planning to meet up 2 friends separately. Only managed to meet up with 1, cos the other gotta spend quality time with his family. Still, it was a good time. Turns out I was an "answered prayer", cos my friend has been bemoaning to God on the cut-down of her social life due to the busyness of her life. Well, glad to spend time just chilling out and fellow-shipping over food*.

After that sow lunch, went to SKS to soak up the Word. Wasn't planning on buying stuff, cos still have a couple of unread books lying around. But couldn't resist buying "Simply Christian" by Tom Wright, as I browse through the pages. It's pretty straightforward, written in a conversational tone, evangelistic yet non-threatening. Hmm, looking forward to reading it...

Came home and chatted to mom for a while. She just came back from watching "Money No Enough 2", and we shared some thoughts on what we thought about the movie. Had my dinner while my bro went for his jog. Now chilling out and blogging~

Ah, the perfect way to spend a day~ relaxed, carefree, with no agenda.

* No alcohol, cos my friend still gotta work :P
