on being blessed by more receiving than giving this Christmas...

before thou wag thou holy finger at "moi" at the seemingly secularist title, STOP!* It is not a commandment I am giving.** Just an observation on my own life this holiday season. Never really had the habit of giving people gifts during Christmas.^ So this year, as usual, wasn't prepared to give gifts.

However, am much blessed by the multiple gifts I have received from various family, friends, and loved ones. Be them big or small, expensive or not, practical or whimsical, I treasure them all. Not because of the item per se, but more of the thoughts behind the giving of gifts.

Eh, if you do not see me using your gifts, please do not be upset. Some things I just cannot use without losing my "manliness"^^... How do a regular guy carry off having stuffed toys in his apparel?? Unthinkable...

Anyway, back to the thread, I hope you have been blessed by giving and receiving to and from God and the people around you. As the year 2006 draws to a close, take some time to catalogue the good and bad things that has happened in your life, and give thanks to God... My prayer for you in 2007 is that you'll be able to give and receive to the people around you in the magnitude that you have given and received from God.

--------------------------------------------------

*muahahaha, broken the 4th wall for the 1st time, I believe

** anyway, who am I to you? :p Just a regular guy, writing irregularly in his blog regulaire... Don't have to follow what I say, you know...

^eh, in fact, think I'm not the "giving" sort of person...

^^ not true, actually. Our identity and confidence is solely rested upon our relationship with Christ, and not on externalities. Above statement is just a "smoke-screen".... muahahhhaa!

on how I spent the last Saturday of 2006...

well, got up way early in the morning, despite last night late-night partying in CG. Guess My bio-clock all tuned up to go to work, even though it's a Saturday. Logged onto the Net, checked my e-mail and surfed the Net and stuff. Funny how I will rather spend the time on the Net rather than pray and seek Him... hmm, something to chew on and do about in the coming year...

Looked out of the window at 7am, am pleasantly surprised by the bright sun peeking through the overcast sky. Was thinking to myself, "Waaaa, first time got sunshine in donkey weeks, if don't swim now, then when?" Go to Woodlands pool, all expectant to dive in, except to find it closed to public for renovations - DOH! so spend an additional 15 minutes to go to Yishun to swim. First time in 5 weeks. The water was refreshingly cold, but I only pulled 10 laps before quitting the pool. Too many people in the pool, cos' of all the children swimming calsses - bleah!

Came back home, "kenah" conscripted by mom to cover everything at home with big plastic sheets. Upgrading going on at my place, so everything covered in fine film of dust. Kinda weary by the end of the whole exercise at around 3pm, so decided to take a nap. Woke up at 6pm just in time for dinner - pig trotters in dark soy sauce, yummy! Went to Causeway point to shop for sandals, but they dun any nice ones which catches my fancy. So in the end, had to settle for shopping for toiletries at Shop adn Save :(.

Came home, opened up my last can of Carlsberg's and plopped down in front of the laptop to write blog entries. Oh, this is the 3rd time i'm writing this entry. Think the Internet connection is still screwy, and affecting the time-out sessions. Ah well...

on random thoughts at the end of the year...

yeaps, have been partying too much. That's why have not been blogging too much these days. Is it only me, or does anyone feels that they have partied too much around these days? Well, gotta go and reflect and think about what I'm gonna put in this before 2006 comes to a total end... Following will be a few pieces of random ramblings... :P

on the Exercises of a Good Religious Person...

From the Imitation Of Christ, Book 1, Chapter 19

--------------------------------------------------------------

The life of a good religious person ought to be adorned with all virtues[1]; that he may inwardly be such as outwardly he seemeth to men.

And with reason there ought to be much more within, that is perceived without. For God beholdeth us;[2] whom we are bound most highly to reverence wheresoever we are, and to walk in purity,[3] like angels, in his sight.

Daily ought we to renew our purposes, and to stir up ourselves to greater fervor, as though this were the first day of our conversion; and to say:

“Help me, my God, in this my good purpose, and in thy holy service: and grant that I may now this day begin perfectly; for that which I have done hitherto is as nothing.”

2.         As according to our purpose shall be the success of our spiritual progress; and much diligence is necessary to him that will show progress.

And if he that firmly purposeth often faileth, what shall he do that seldom purposeth anything, or with little resolution?

It may fall out in various ways we forsake our purpose; yet the light omission of spiritual exercises seldom passes without some loss to our souls.

The purpose of just men depends not upon their own wisdom, but upon God’s grace; on whom they rely for whatsoever they take in hand.

For man proposes, but God disposes[4]; neither is the way of man in himself.

3.         If an accustomed exercise be sometimes omitted, either for some act of piety, or profit to my brother; it may be easily be recovered again.

But if out of a weariness, or out of carelessness, we lightly forsake the same, it is a great offence against God, and will be found to be prejudicial to ourselves. Let us do the best we can, we shall still too easily fail in many things.[5]

Yet must we always have a fixed course and especially against those failings which do most of all hinder us.

We must diligently search into and set in order both the outward and the inward man, because both of them are of importance to our progress in godliness.

4.         If thou canst not continually recollect thyself, yet do it sometimes, at least once a day, namely, in the morning or at night.

In the morning fix thy good purpose; and at night examine thyself what thou hast done, how thou hast behaved thyself in word, deed and thought;[6] for in these perhaps thou hast oftentimes offended both God and thy neighbor.

Gird up thy loins like a man against the evil assaults of the devil; bridle thy riotous appetite, and thou shalt be the better able to keep under all the unruly desires of the flesh.

Never be entirely idle; but either be reading, or writing, or praying, or meditating, or endeavoring something for the public good.

As for bodily exercises they must be used with discretion, neither are they to be practiced of all men alike.

5.         Those exercises which are not common are not to be exposed to public view; for things private are practiced more safely at home.

Nevertheless thou must beware thou neglect not those which are common, being more ready for what is private. But having fully and faithfully accomplished all which thou art bound and enjoined to do, if thou hast any spare time, turn thee to thyself, as thy devotion shall desire.

All can not use one kind of spiritual exercise, but one is more useful for this person, another for that.

According to the seasonableness of times also, various exercises are fitting: some suit better with us on working-days, other on holydays.

In the time of temptation, we have need of some, and of others in time of peace and quietness.

Some we practice when we are pensive, and others when we rejoice in the Lord.

6.         About the time of the chief festivals, good exercises are to be renewed, and the prayers of holy men more fervently to be implored.

From festival to festival, we should make some good resolution, as though we were then to depart out of this world, and to come to the everlasting feast in heaven.

Therefore ought we carefully to prepare ourselves at holy times, and to live more devoutly, and to keep more strictly all things that we are to observe, as though we were shortly at God’s hands to receive the rewards of our labors.

7.         But if it be deferred, let us realize that we are not sufficiently prepared, and unworthy yet of so great glory which shall be revealed in us[7] in due time; and let us endeavor to prepare ourselves better for our departure.

“Blessed is that servant,” saith the evangelist St. Luke, ”whom his Lord when he cometh  shall find watching: verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods.”[8]

into our faith

Rating:★★★★
Category:Music
Genre: Christian & Gospel
Artist:Walking On Water
fantastic compilation -
-------------------------------------
From Website (http://walkingonwaterband.com/piof.html)

God works in amazing ways. And we, at Walking on Water, know that He has divinely brought us together to be - in many ways - a band of sisters, musicians and ministers. Ours is a unique make-up of Christian women musicians who are cross-cultural and span a wide age gap. We knew we would last when we discovered our shared love for the gospel, R&B, funk and jazz musical genres. Through the band's growing ministry, God also strengthens our individual callings towards music and missions, and ignites our passion for songwriting.

We count out talent and songs as gifts from God the Father. We feel blessed and privileged that He is communicating His heart through the songs we sing. Each song is born out of our individual triumphs, trials and frustrations, joys and challenges of living Godly lives in the midst of an ever-increasingly corrupt world. Even today, these songs continue to transform our hearts.

Each one of us at Walking on Water has a story to share about His mercies in our lives. We were all once lost and alone in our personal struggles, but today we are slowly but surely walking the road to true significance together. We wish to share this Joy and Hope, which we have found. May our songs – to and about Jesus – transform the hearts of many who hear them and give them this same breakthrough and victory!

Our vision is for Walking on Water to be a channel for God’s heart to be poured into (not exclusively): youths and women-in-crisis, people who are forgotten or invisible and people in the music industry, in our nation and beyond. It is our heart’s desire that God would use our ordinary lives in His extraordinary ways to bless people, to bring the Life of Jesus to many and to be vessels for His glory.

Into Our Faith is the long awaited debut CD from one of Singapore’s most well known Christian bands, Walking On Water. Recorded ‘live’ off their last gig before bassist Mylene Ng left for a two year hiatus to Australia, Into Our Faith depicts the band members’ spiritual journey over the past three years.

The collection starts with a piece inspired by Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, and continues to weave in and out of themes based on theological contention, late night musings and relationships. Sincere, heartfelt and honest lyrics run through these gospel songs such as World Fall Apart (‘with my world crumbling around me/and my life falling apart’) and You See Me (‘Lord help me see/my life is worthy in your eyes’), written during particularly trying times. And the nice thing about the CD is that the sleeves are peppered with short background introductions behind each song.

Stylistically the versatile Walking On Water tackles pop, R&B, funk to rap, usual of the band members’ combined influences. Into Our Faith adds to the revival of locally written gospel music, the kind that significantly speak to us during the ups and downs of our journey in faith.

on a blessed Christmas Eve night...

went to Bukit Panjang last night, as the church held a Christmas countdown party. My family had their own program, so had to settle dinner myself. Thank God for providing a splendid spread through the generosity of the people. Me? I just brought an empty stomach. :P Yes, I know this makes me sounds like a cheapskate and not well-mannered; but hey, from experience, there's usually too much food not being consumed and being left behind as left-overs. So I considered myself as one of Nature's garbage-disposers. :D

Tagged along onto one of my friend's CG, as most of my CG already made plans for last night, or just wanted the time to spend with their family. Am glad to meet new friends and just bask in the family-warmth-ness of another CG. Also, a few of the "crazy" cast from the morning musical were there - had fun ribbing and disturbing one another. Also got to say Christmas greetings to a few important people*,  whom I missed seeing in the morning.

After the supper, adjourned to the main sanctuary for a time of worship and entertainment. haha, the church "rehashed" the music from last year's Christmas CD. But that didnt matter, as we still belt out the songs in genuine spirits of cheer and joyfulness.

Was especially blessed by the item put up by some of the ladies in the Cantonese service. The way which they sang their hearts out and danced for the Lord, was especially moving. They did a Cantonese rendition of the hymn "I Will Follow Him" ala Sisters' Act style. Very daring for some of the ladies to boogie in front of the congregation, especially when some of them are aged over 60s.** Alas, they didn't do an encore after the end of the performance. Nonetheless, I was very impressed by the joy and the love which these ladies expressed in their item.

After that, we had "Walking on Water", a local R&B Gospel band performed in-house inside the church. Say what you will, in-house live performance still wins hands down, as compared to listening to CD and radio. Am glad I was able to listen to the live performance of the 4 talented women artistes.

Thank God was still able to catch the last bus home, even though the celebrations ended way after 12 midnight. God is good, as usual... :D

*important as in dear to my heart. "Bo pian", morning was working what...

** Don't ask me how I know their age. It's never polite to disclose a woman's age... :p

Walking On Water

http://walkingonwaterband.com
R&B Gospel, all women's band. Very nice music~

on Lost no more... : (

had the privilege of helping out in the Christmas Eve service musical "Lost" in church this year round. Had a great time getting to know new people and doing new stuff. Here's a recount of some of the more interesting things that happened:

1) Got to make a few new friends, and renew a few old friendships working on the musical. Really had fun making all the props, especially the waves, the GIGANTIC shark fin, the human legs, the fish and the sotong. As learned from 2 of my younger "scissors", you can do much miracles with newspaper...

2) The church main sanctuary has long glass windows that needed to be covered up with canvas sheets. This is to reduce the sunlight streaming into the sanctuary, or else the lighting equipment which we have painstaking forked out resources on won't have the maximum impact. Unfortunately, we don't have automatic rollers to roll down the canvas sheets.* So they have to be manually put in place, by inserting the fish-eye hooks at the top of canvas sheets into nails above the windows.

As my friend joking puts it, it is easier for the camel to go through the eye of the needle than for us to accomplish the task.... :D

We tried lashing bamboo poles and dragging the canvas sheets into place. But the bamboo poles just weren't sturdy enough to take the canvas up. In the end, we have to construct metal scaffolding up to the top of the window, and climb all the way up (without the benefits of safety belts and what nots).

It was particularly scary for me, cos I have phobia of heights. Alas, being the tallest in the crew, I was called on to hang up most of the sheets. Thank God I managed to hang up most of the sheets. And where else do you have chance to climb and scamper around like a monkey inside the church sanctuary? :D

3) Got last minute arrow to be the "Power-point" man. "Lost" is a multi-media theatrical presentation, integrating sound, sight and music.** Had to stay back for quite late for rehearsals in the week leading up till today's production. But it was worth it, being a part in the wonderful process. :D

ok, getting "chong hei" again... Blessed Christmas everyone! *Breaks out in throaty voice* Feliz Navidad...

---------------------------------------------------

* haha, unless people give more to the building fund, I guess :P anyway, these are but fanciful gadgets, nice to have but not a necessity...

** Duh, like which modern theatre production isn't? :p

Terrific collection of Batman comics, from various illustrators, writes and letterers. I got a copy from the National Library (NLB), and unfortunately, it was vandalised. The pinups and covers were "snipped" away. However, the stories that remained are excellent. Each illustrator brings with him a unique art style. A must read for all Batman and pop art aficionados.

on having a good time after work...

ha, have not been writing as much lately, cos had been very busy. Here's an update of what me and my 2 other amigo buddies did on the Tuesday that just went past:

Our boss sent us an e-mail about a part last Friday. It seems our land-lord wants to renew relationships and have a festive celebrative time together, with all the tenants in our office block. So they organised a "little get-together" thingie. I think what lured my friends and I in were this:

Yuletide party begins

            * Good Food.

            * Good Beer.

            * Good Cheer! "

So the three of us went there on Tuesday evening after work with no expectations. I think  we just though it'll be a quick buffet dinner spread with a few Tiger Beer ladies serving drinks. :D

Contrary to expectations, the landlord manged to spice up the old office space into something that's quite close to a night spot joint.* I say "Quite close", but it's not really that close la. At least they have free flow of beer.** The roast beef and turkey was not bad.

Think I enjoyed the company of my two other "brothers" the most. During work hours, I'm pretty much focused on learning my new stuff, so don't usually mingle around much in office. Am glad for the time I am able to join the "2 MOST HANDSUM AND MOST AVAILABLE"^^ guys in office for a time of letting our hair down...

From left to right: Eddie, Mark and me

* Allo, not night club hor, with all the sleazy mamasan and hostess kind. Think of Wine Bar and MOS...

** only Tiger Beer, but "mai hiam la, bo hir hei mah ho..."^

Potter's Cafe By The Pool

Rating:★★★★
Category:Restaurants
Cuisine: Other
Location:just besides the swimming pool at SAFRA Clubhouse Mount Faber (2 Telok Blangah Way Singapore 098803)
Went there to spend some time with 2 friends who came back from abroad to spend time with their family. Had a very good meal there.

Menu is a mixture of Western and Asian cuisine. I think the owners are the people who used to do "Country Manna". Reminiscent of the food of the restaurant.

I tried the Garlic bread with cheese for appetizers. Fantastically done, served piping hot. For the main course, I tried the lamb dish. Also superb and thoughtful - no bones! The sauce was the spicy kind, but not so hot as to burn your throat. For desert, had a cappuccino with a slice of brownie, without the ice-cream*. My friends tried the lasagna and gave it three thumbs up**. The dory and the spring chicken were great too.

It's a nice little joint, peaceful and quiet. If you want privacy or want to spend some time in solitude, I recommend this place~

*without the ice cream, as I ate a lot already...

** three thumbs out of two, not out of five. :p

on promises to God...

ok, was just spending time with a friend the other time, over a Hoe and coffee and ice-cream*, when I was posed this question: Does God expects me to keep my promise to Him? The context was that in the rashness of her youth, my friend made a promise to the Lord. It's the usual kinda promise we make when we are desperate for help, that goes something like this: "Lord, I need this and this thing to be done in my life. If You will answer my prayer, I will do such and such thing for You." And He did deliver on this promise to my friend. It's just that she hasn't had the opportunity to fulfil the promise - or her end of the bargain, so to speak. Does God still expects her to uphold her promise?

Well, being the people's person that I am, I will normally give the answer that "Of course God is all compassionate and considerate. He knows what you go through. In His goodness, He has answered your prayers. Now just take your time and settle your own affairs first, before fulfilling your promise to God..."

However, that was not what I said that afternoon. Interestingly, the few days at office prior to this meeting, I have been listening to the sermons of an "old-school" preacher. And he did talked about how God doesn't need our promises - He is the Lord Almighty, and is the provider and giver of all things, and do not need our promises. However, if you make a promise to God, then He expects you to fulfil it. He believes that God hears our every prayer, and if you commit something as a promise unto the Lord, then He will hold you accountable to it.

Haha, don't how comforted was my friend by that response, but I believe it is what the Lord wants her to remember. Even though He is gracious and understanding, He still expects us to keep our promise to Him. Not because He needs it, but we need it, for the good of our souls.

my parting shot: It's funny** how The Lord has been sending the Word in advance to me this past year. And I thank Him for His goodness in providing the wonderful counsel for me to give to others in their times of need .

--------------------------------------------------------------------

* I had the Hoegardens, my friend had the coffee and ice-cream. Not wise to drink both in 1 sitting, unless you want to kee pvisiting the toilet...

** not funny "funny" as in "hahaha" or hilarious funny, but "divinely" or "miraculously" funny.

on escalating mobile phone bills and a new home phone...

these past 2 months have been very “凶”on my wallet, as I had to fork out between $50-70 on my hand phone bill. Was still wondering why I was charged so high, then I realised actually my plan do not cover for all free incoming calls. As i recall the times I talked with impunity on my phone, happily asking my friends to talk longer as I said to them "Never mind la, FREE incoming calls what", I "wept"* uncontrollably in my heart.

The moral behind this tale: Know Thy Handphone Plan Billing!

In the end, went to shop with my sister on a new house phone. We walked the length and breadth of the telephone counter in the shop at least 5-6 times. Went around playing with the phones, both corded and cordless. We were thinking for convenience's sake, might as well get a cordless phone. But all the cordless phone models really cannot make it. Most look like toys, with the very plastic-y feel. In the end, we settled on a cheap cordless model, because we knew in our hearts most electric appliances don't last beyond 3 years in our household.** No point spending a bomb-shell^ on aesthetics and durability. So far the new phone functions adequately. I'm just giving thanks I can start talking to people at home again using the house phone, thereby cutting on my mobile phone fees...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Real men do not weep on the outside! (Right.) They will rather bleed to death first before shedding a single drop of tear~ 大丈夫流血不流泪。。。

** Don't know whether it's they don't electrical appliances as they used to, or that my family really are rough on our belongings...

^ Figuratively, of course. We don't keep an ammunitions dump at home... :D

on sound waves and light waves...

ha, on my way to work this morning, was suddenly struck by this revelation. Recalled that during my orientation 2 weeks ago, my boss was talking about what are the properties of radio waves.* He mentioned that technically light and sound waves are really the same, just that they moved across space in different frequencies. He used an interesting example that still stuck in my mind. Let say we have a analogue radio, with an infinite spectrum band with which you can change your radio receiving frequency. If you keep on increasing the frequency i.e. tune your band ever "upwards" on the radio, very soon you will be able to see light coming out of the radio. So basically, light and sound waves are all part of the same family.^ You just have to alter the frequency at the source to get different products.

And this morning it suddenly struck me, it's the same with my life. What people hear I say ("radio waves") and what people see I do ("light waves") should basically reflects the same source. To carry it further, if I preach the Word ("radio waves"), but do not do what I preach ("light waves"), or vice versa, there will be very glaring inconsistencies in my life... A sobering thought. Not only must I proclaim the Gospel in my life with my voice, I must affirm the Gospel by having a transformed life.

*Yes, it was like a secondary school lesson on physics. Only difference is that my boss managed to keep the lesson very interesting, even for a non-science/engineering person as me.

On a totally different note, I shudder at the recollection of how my secondary Physics teacher used to teach the lessons - he really killed the subject for me.

^ that will be the family of electromagnetic waves...

O Holy Night

O Holy Night Lyrics
Christmas Carol Lyrics

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!

Lifehouse - Blind

2 of my friends are going through some rough patch now, over matters of the heart. Somehow this song just reminded me of their situation...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lifehouse - Blind Lyrics

I was young but I wasn't naive
I watched helpless as you turned around to leave

And still I have the pain I have to carry

A past so deep that even you could not bury if you tried

After all this time

I never thought we'd be here

Never thought we'd be here

When my love for you was blind

But I couldn't make you see it

Couldn't make you see it

That I loved you more than you'll ever know

A part of me died when I let you go

I would fall asleep

Only in hopes of dreaming

That everything would be like is was before

But nights like this it seems are slowly fleeting

They disappear as reality is crashing to the floor

After all this time

I never thought we'd be here

Never thought we'd be here

When my love for you was blind

But I couldn't make you see it

Couldn't make you see it

That I loved you more than you'll ever know

A part of me died when I let you go

After all this time

Would you ever wanna leave it

Maybe you could not believe it

That my love for you was blind

But I couldn't make you see it

Couldn't make you see it

That I loved you more than you will ever know

A part of me died when I let you go

And I loved you more than you'll ever know

A part of me dies when I let you go

on receiving an unusual compliment....

I just received an unusal compliment this morning. There I was, trying hard no to fall asleep at my workstation, listening to my 3rd sermon in the office. Along came my colleague, who’s an Afro-American, bigger than me, in both size and stature. Whereupon standing at my cubicle, he issued forth, in a booming sonorous voice*, “Jack, you freaked my wife out… (I was thinking in my heart at that point, “Oh shit, shit, shit, how did I offend the missus???”)  She thinks you’re the best thing since sliced bread.”

Seeing my mystified expression**, he proceeds to explain that he was paying me a compliment, just saying I was “neat”. After hearing that, I looked down at the sheaves of paper that was strewn over one half of my workstation. Again I was stumped. Finally, my colleague had to say, “She think’s you’re okay.” And then the light hit, and enlightenment came***. I tried to recover with a weak “Oh. Yea. Right. I was still thinking whether did I sliced anything this week or not... mumble mumble…”

------------------------------------------

*His voice is one of the nicest I’ve ever heard, as he has experience in radio broadcasting before.

** I was wondering how come he never proceeded to plummet the breath out of me, after saying I “freaked out his wife.”

*** plus I was giving thanks that ok, he’s not gonna pummel me… :p

on Timeliness is not necessarily next to Godliness...

ha, as mentioned in my last blog, I'm a stickler for schedules and timing. I get super upset when things don't happen on time. If you don't give me a good reason for being late, I'll be very put off and put out by you. So it's kinda amazing when my friends stood me up at an appointment about 2 weeks back. Amazing because I didn't blow my top off at them. I know these bunch of friends are habitual latecomers. So I sms-ed them in advance, telling them to be on time and the works...

Despite all my sms-es, my friends were still late for the appointment. The best part was that they weren't really apologetic about the whole thing. Feeling really pissed, but not really wanted to make a scene, I decided to do it the Dilbert way*, by being sarcastic. I just said it's a wonder that how they can survive in the corporate world with their sense of timing. Alas, I still lost out, as they employed the Dogbert** way of nonchalance and utter disregard to what I said. One even replied "Sorry lor, if you are my boss, I'll be here 15 mins before the stated time lor. But you are not. Anyway, not the first time you came out with us what. You know women are always late one what..."^

Instead of pushing me over the edge and losing my cool, my friend's response just made me pause in my tracks. I knew then, if I had reacted in the way that I had planned to i.e. make a big scene and fuss, I'll probably would ruin that session. Heck, with the "wrath" and "righteous anger" I was feeling, I probably would consider not be friends with them anymore. Yet I was also perturbed: why was I being so upset over their nonchalance? I knew even before that session, my friends are not punctual. Come to weekends, they usually dun leave their homes before noon, in order to sleep in and avoid the sun^^. So they will always "screw up the timing". So why was I so bothered about this?

And suddenly I knew the answer. I was bothered because they do not share my views as their own. In other words, my self worth was actually predicated on how they viewed and valued my beliefs. Or to put it in more simpler terms, I felt I was not "important" because my friends did not subscribe to my views and obey me. Once I got over that hurdle, suddenly everything doesn't seemed as bad anymore. I realized my insistence to punctuality for that session was actually hindering my reaching out to my pre-believing friends. If I got so much energy to be angry and feel insulted, I might as well channel that energy towards reaching out to my friends.

And that was when I conclude Timeliness is not necessarily next to Godliness. Timeliness and being punctual means you have respect for other people's time, and at least have a certain degree of social grace and courtesy. However, when others are not punctual, you don't have to let loose the dragon within you and be a pompous ass (as I was trying to be, by carrying off the attitude of "Ha! I'm more punctual than you~ you social scumbag! i'm better than you!!"). Rather, just exercise grace and love. I'm reminded by something my colleague said another day, when someone was thanking him for taking the time to just talk even while he's rushing some work. His simple reply of "Hey, my time is your time" just struck me. I'm still a long way off from this stage of cultivation of grace in my life, as compared to my colleague...

* If you don’t know who Dilbert is, you must be from Elbonia...

** well, i figured, in the world of "Dilbert", Dogbert trumps Dilbert, despite the fact that Dogbert is a dog (duh) and Dilbert is a human.

^ I'm utterly amazed by that last liner, because I know of some women who are pretty conscious about punctuality, and have the basic courtesy.

^^ They could be vampires or ghosts, from the fastidious way they try to avoid the sun. Living in Singapore that has not been an easy thing to do...

on bus rides and taxi rides...

yesterday went to the bus-stop, wanting to catch my normal bus at 7.15am. Unfortunately, it seemed like there either was a disruption to the normal timing, or a lot of people wanted to go to Marine Parade early in the morning. Whatever it was, I certainly could not get onto the jammed-as-sardines bus. As the bus pulled out of the bus stop, I just happened to glance at the rear end of that bus, and realised there actually was still standing room within that section. As usual, becomes victimised by the inconsiderate Singaporean syndrome again.Thank God I was still able to get to office on time.

Later in the evening, I got out of the office on the dot, as I have an appointment to rush for in the evening. The ideal plan was to catch the connecting bus on time, so that I could reach home by 7.15pm, have a quick, warm, home-cooked dinner before heading out to meet my friends at Clementi at 8.30pm. At least, that was the plan la. However, I didn't catch the connecting bus. And the traffic was super slow on the highways, because of the rain. In the home stretch, there was a severe accident along Mandai area on the highways. Think my journey was prolonged by 20 mins, because of the long queue of vehicles that snailed past the accident site. In the end, I reached home at 8pm. Had to send out some sms, and wolfed down my dinner, before rushing out to hail a cab in order not to be stupendously late.^

Well, I was thinking a lot of unfriendly thoughts to humanity in general on that cab ride that night. Think the uncles sorta got my vibes. He drew me out of my cloud of moodiness with simple conversation. It didn't totally made me cheerful instantly, but it did alleviate my angst a bit. In the end, I was glad I took the cab ride instead of taking MRT and feeder bus.Talk about taxi-therapy.

on not writing for the past 4 days and blurring vision...

ha, have not been writing in my blog in actuality for the past 2 weeks. So much things to blog about, yet just can't bring myself to spend time in front of the laptop writing at home. because it takes brain juices to write something interesting, not just some random stuff that pops into your head, like this line i'm writing... :p

On another note, I have not been taking care of my eyes too well these few weeks. Think vision is getting more and more blurred, be it from staring too intently at the monitor screen (computer or TV) or reading my 10,000 books.* Hmm, maybe it's time to make an appointment with my opthamologist** at the end of the month. It's been 2 years since my last check-up...

* An exaggeration, actually. Don't think I have read 10,000 books as yet. ok, more of a lie then...

** haha, my freind just reminded me, should be "optician". I not so much money to go to a othmalogist just to change my spectacles. :p
