on God's humorous sense of timing and telling...

ok, I worship an almighty God who's not only omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, but also omni-humorous. As I've confessed to my kakis these few days, I don't read the Bible enough for my own good. Yet my heavenly Father always have a way to speak deep into my heart  and break down my defenses.

For example, this morning, during the dawn prayer session, Pastor Ed was encouraging us

1) to have intimacy with God and be obedient to the promptings of God - what He lays about our heart, just do it;

2) to know God more, through learning the promises He gave through the Word and

3) to lay upon power from on high, through prayer.

Even as we broke up into small groups of twos and threes to pray, I was flipping through my bible to consider what to pray through. Now the bible I brought with me was the one that which I doodle, highlighted and underlined a lot, as it was the first bible i received from a dear friend after I received Jesus Christ into my life. Even as I was reflecting upon Pastor's words to us, my eyes were drawn to this passage in Philippians:

But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Philippians 3:7-10 (NIV)

It was just underlined simply with black ink in my bible - and quite frankly, it was kinda difficult to link up with the points that Pastor just made. However, there was this prompting to lay hold of the promises and the desires of the apostle Paul, to give up all that we hold as riches and to become more Christ-like and to know Him more. So I prayed through that passage with my friends, claiming upon the promises in this passage, giving thanks for all that has gone through in 2007, seeking forgiveness for not being serious with God and asking for revelation and direction.

At the end o f our prayers, the church sang "Knowing You Jesus" as a response unto what was prayed to God. This is an old familiar song that I grew up with in my walk with God, and as soon as the intro was played, the words came into mind, and I was like, "Okay, God, You're good. You win."

Knowing You Jesus
Graham Kendrick
All I once held dear,
built my life upon,
All this world reveres
and wars to own;

All I once thought gain
I have counted loss,
Spent and worthless now
compared to this.

Knowing You, Jesus,
knowing You
There is no greater thing.
You're my all,
You're the best,
You're my joy, my righteousness,
And I love You Lord.

Now my heart's desire
is to know You more,
To be found in You
and know as Yours,
To possess by faith
what I could not earn
All surpassing gift
of righteousness

Oh to know the power
of Your risen life,
And to know You
in Your sufferings;
To become like You
in Your death, my Lord,
So with You to live
and never die.

Well, to some, it may seems like like some cosmic fluke or "by-chance thingie. To me, it was pretty certain that God is showing me that He can, and will show me things, if I but just follow Him.

on foot in mouth disease...

Later as we were making our way to Morton's for an after-dinner drink, ran into one of my long-lost ex-colleague. Haha, caught up with her in the weirdest of places - along the sidewalk of a big road. Tried to make a joke, but failed completely. :D Think I wasn't thinking straight, as all the blood was in my tummy digesting the maguro and dulled from the Mojito. Haha, think I ruined her evening, can literally sense her warmth droped 20 degrees after the initial enthusiastic greeting. Sent her an sms later to apologise~

Moral of the Story: 讲话要经过大脑先!(literal from Mandarin, "say-word-must-go-through-big-brain-first")

on staying up late or staying up early...

depending on how your look at it. Was home from town around 2am in the wee hours this morning. Decided not to sleep because

1) Still having a bit of buzz from the Mojito and the Noble 2003 sweet desert wine of New Year's Eve night;

2) Wanted to complete some of my blog entries

3) Chatting to some of my contacts who just came back from their New Year's celebrations

4) If I had chose to fall asleep, probably wouldn't have woke up in time for the dawn prayer session at my church.

So was the first hours of 2008 productive and useful? You betcha!~

on eating out on New Year's Eve~

Went to celebrate a friend's birthday at Sun at Chjimes. Great food, great company; even though our feelings were being cheated over the 饭团 (tenmusu), because they didn't use the authentic Japanese rice.

on playing 3-person chess

Yellow is 吴国
Blue is 魏国
Red is 蜀国

My friend bought this really interesting chess set in china, that allows 3 person to play chinese chess simulatenously. Since yesterday was only half day in office, and we were all in holiday mood, decided to engage in a little bout of intellectual activities.

on encountering a cute "putty tat"...

haha, sure wun call this tiger Slyvester! :D

on fluffy clouds and meeting a playful cat on a lazy Sunday afternoon...

Yesterday, didn't stay out too long after church. Needed to send in my friend's coat for dry-cleaning before returning it to him. After that, decided to hide in the coldness of the library at Woodlands to escape the heat of the day (Free Aircon rox!) :D was nodding off to lalaland and reading my big book of church history for a bout 2 hours, before decided to have a "quick bite". Drank "ying yeong" (鸳鸯) and had toast with chicken-floss and special mayonnaise-condensed milk sauce - o iiii shhiii!~ :D

After the rich tea-snack, decided to walk to the new park connector besides Republic Polytechnic. Wanna check out what facilities they have at the fitness station, so that can go there and use. On the way there, was struck by the clouds in the sky. Absolutely gorgeous!

Just love the way the sun rays penetrate through the dark clouds and gave them the silver lining. An inspiration perhaps, to hang on in the darkest times?

The new park connector is halfway through its construction, so it is still relatively small in area. Thankfully the fitness stations are up, so I can go for a quick jog and do some stationary exercises like pull-ups and sit-ups.* Decided not to take the feeder bus back home since I already covered half the distance home. While walking past a block of flats, I encountered this photogenic stray tomcat~

Too bad I didn't have cat-treats on me. Hmm, must remember to go buy a packet~ :D

*If I am disciplined enough :P

on recovering from "brother"-ing on Saturday

Had the privilege to help out at a dear friend's wedding on Saturday. Thankfully, the "sisters" were merciful and didn't "tekan" the brothers too much in the morning. Still, it was tiring. think must be the age thing. Past my thirties liao, and it's my umpteenth time being a "brother" :p

Ok, still waiting for the photos from the photographer. Here are some more "artistic" shots I took with my humble mobile phone camera:

on a slow last day of 2007 in office today~

Yea, last day of 2007 in office! Decided to come in sandals again, cos it's 1/2 day. Only one of my friends came in super formal wear - cos he though Monday cannot wear dress-down.

We all told him good la, he'll be getting the Best Dressed Employee of last day of 2007 award... :D

on a slow 2nd last day of the year in office today~

this morning came into office quite early, by 7am reach office liao. Cos last night slept really early, concussed by 10pm - think my body was too tired put by all the partying and eating and drinking. :p Anyway, was glad to come in early and clear some work stuff before devotions...

Decided to dress even further down than the usual casual friday, and decided to come to office in sandals

Only 4 of us were around for morning devotions*. The facilitator shared with us a song that touched her very deeply during Christmas service at her church last week. It's "Five loaves and Two Fishes" by Corrine May. It talks about the viewpoint of the little boy who offers up his lunch for Jesus to perform his miracle of feeding the five thousand at Galilee. Very nice song!~

After that, went around catching up with a friend in office, who's just back from her trip in Japan. She brought us back nice banana-shaped pastry~

It's now in my stomach already~ :D

Woot! Less than an hour to lunch-time!~

* supposed to have 2 more, but they were late :p

Ok, the guys at my IT and Tech department are some of the most fun guys around to be with. For Christmas, all of them got themselves a new toy: THE USB MISSILE LAUNCHER!

I wun step in there for quite some time in 2008, lest I become target practice for them :P

Soiree At Willie 23 Dec '07

在一个也黑风高的夜里。。。

Went to this nice place around Holland Village to chill out for teh night. Free flow of beer, wine, scotch, plenty of off-key caroling to techno-beats and mind-bending, scruple-twisting games. What's not to like? :D

on why there are unreasonable people...

haha, my friend shared this with me as we were walking back from lunch...

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
- George Bernard Shaw

He says from this day forth, he will try to be as "unreasonable" as possible.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Kids & Family
A "return to innocence" movie for me. I think deepness and depth is how much you want to make out of this movie. Though it's short (about 90 mins), you don't really feel time passing so fast, as you'll be mesmerised by all the little trinkets. A must watch for all kids, though parents might find it hard to find a toy shop as Mr. Magorium's to let the kids play! :D

The Warlords/ 投名狀 (2007)

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama
Gory movie~ First 5 minutes into the opening you'll be assaulted on your senses already. Not a bad story-telling; didn't feel bored throughout, as I though the pacing and the portrayal of the politics in court is pretty good.

2 things I got of this film:

a) My friend joked that one should never go and "结义"/become sworn brothers as it would almost always lead to no good end. (think of 三国桃园结义 and 梁山结义)

b) Men fight best when they are desperate ("抢钱,抢粮,抢娘们儿!!" :D )

The Golden Compass (2007)

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy
Eh, found it to be so-so. I don't think the film was long enough, so the pacing and the story-telling was kinda abrupt and halting. The reportedly "Anti-God"/"Anti-Church" elements didn't came across that strongly. I was expecting something more spectacular - instead this felt like a let-down...

Nicole Kidman was gorgeous and real enough as the villianess. Newcomer Dakota Blue Richards acted well as the feisty protagonist. We shall be watching her progress with interest^.

On we can also find Wii in the Bible...

on we are Silly-poreans~

haha, term coined by my friend. He just came back from an overseas working trip, and was appalled to find the price of his instant coffee has risen!! :D He was cursing and swearing over MSN to me a few days back, and ranting wanting to get off this "stupid piece of rock"...

and now today, we have another news that taxis are also going to increase their fares... what fun!

P.S. oooooo, apparently, "Sillypore" is not my friend's invention. Someone actually had a website dedicated to this. Man, I feel like frog in a well... :p Just go Google it, "Sillypore"...

Hmm, maybe I can come up with a new anthemn...

*to the chorus of "We Are Singapore"*

We are Sillypore, We are Sillypore
All our costs are rising, We are Sillypore

on my friend's cool toys (GPGT)*

ok, this is my friend's 3rd most recent addition to his toy collection. Went out together on our leave day to China Square to get this ultra-cool edition of Megatron. It cost him 135 big kahuna, but he said at least it will make him smile every morning as he wake up and first thing he sees is this in the glass cabinet that he have^.

oh, here is his LATEST addition:

Yea, as you can tell, he's a mega-Transformer fan. I just hope he doesn't name his firstborn "Optimus" or "Megatron"... ROFL

----------------------------------------------------------------------

* Abbreviation for "Got Picture, Got Talk).

^ I'm partially to blame for this analogy. :P Cos he did consult me on whether to spend so much on his toys. Then I just asked him the question "You must think like this: every morning when you wake up, and you go past the glass cabinet, and see this toy, will your heart sing in joy and exultation, or would it cringe in sadness?" I think the reversal-tactics didn't worked in this case...

on birds in the field...

Last Tuesday, got outta house later than usual, because the weather was really fantastic for sleeping in. So didn't managed to catch my usual 6.45am bus from the bus-interchange. That gave me a chance to catch the sky changing colors from dark blue to light sky-blue. Even as I was just sitting down there, suddenly my eyes were caught by the flight of a few small birds on the green slope immediately across from where I sat. I think they were looking for food amongst the grass.

And even as they were darting here and there in the wee hours, I was just suddenly struck by Jesus' words in the Gospel of Matthew.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do Not Worry

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

From Matthew 6:25 - 34, the Bible (NIV).

on the ultra lovey-dovey cake~

ok, this is the heart-shaped birthday cake which my friends gave to the birthday girl last Saturday. Ultimate sweetness. Really, it tastes very the sweet. Why? Because they have shaved milk icing on it, that's why... Man, I better go for my diabetic check-up soon :P

Oh, and like what the girls said, not every person can take such a cake for their celebration. Also, not every guy can give such a cake to a girl for her birthday. To be able to give such a cake, you must be of a certain "kuan" and "say"... XD

I believe them.

on a fun Saturday soiree...

yeaps, just back from a soiree at a new friend's place. Drank 2 bottles of wine with 5 other people, and a glass of bacardi rum-coke, so am in the buzz now. Great fun chilling out, eating cheese, sausages and drinking wine. Even though I was the only guy, didn't feel outta place, as I wisely listened more and talked less*. As not all of us knew one another,** we played simple ice-breakers, like use an animal to describe ourselves, our weirdest dreams, our childhood days in primary and secondary schools and our spiritual walk. All in all, it was a great setting...

*well, initially less lah, after the spirits kicked in, started to be more nonsensical and less straight-laced. :p

It also probably helped that I reminded myself to think of myself as "Jacquiline"  - role-playing works! :D Well, 3 years of being an Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate also helped, since guys are outnumbered by gers, you need to adapt.

** Actually, I think I was the odd one out la, but the gers were gracious enough to let me into the sorority. Oh, it also helped that I got to be the "dust-bin" that gets to mop up the leftovers of the food and drink :D

P.S. Oh, how can I forget? The olive oil our hostess served is fantastic! From Down under, by the brand of Toscana~ C'est tres delicieux! Must buy back if you get thechance to go there!!
